Magnetic Flux: Topic Checklist (Physics C: E&M 13.1)

Specific “I can…” statements for magnetic flux in the calculus-based course, each linked to the guide section and practice question that tests it.

Work through the list without notes. If you cannot do a statement, follow its link, then come back. Guide = study guide; Practice = practice questions.

Understanding

  • I can explain what magnetic flux measures, say that it is a scalar and give its unit, 1 Wb = 1 T·m². (Guide: “What magnetic flux measures”)
  • I can define the area vector of a surface, including the outward rule for closed surfaces. (Guide: “The area vector and the sign of flux”)
  • I can decide whether a flux is positive, negative or zero from the directions of B and A. (Guide: Worked example 1; Practice Q4)
  • I can explain why the net magnetic flux through any closed surface is zero, and link this to the absence of magnetic monopoles. (Guide: “Closed surfaces”; Practice Q3, Q6)

Calculation and skills

  • I can calculate Φ_B = BA cos θ, taking θ from the normal even when the angle to the plane is given. (Practice Q1, Q4)
  • I can find the flux from vector components of B and A. (Guide: “Flat surfaces in a uniform field”; Practice Q2)
  • I can find the flux through loops inside and around a long solenoid. (Guide: “Flux through a solenoid”; Practice Q5)
  • I can set up ∫B·dA with strips (dA = ℓ dx) or rings (dA = 2πr dr) and evaluate it. (Guide: Worked example 2; Practice Q7)
  • I can draw a diagram showing a loop, its area vector and the field, and label the angle θ. (Guide: Figure 1)

Reasoning

  • I can compare the flux through the same loop at different orientations, including the change after a half turn. (Guide: Worked example 1; Practice Q4)
  • I can explain why “field at the middle × area” fails when B varies non-linearly. (Guide: Worked example 2; Practice Q7)
  • I can use ∮B·dA = 0 to find the flux through one part of a closed surface from the others. (Practice Q5, Q6)
