Where IGCSE Mathematics marks are lost early

The first weeks of an IGCSE Mathematics course rarely go wrong on difficulty. They go wrong on method, command words, rounding and units — four habits that cost marks a student had already earned.

Every August the same message goes round parent group chats: the syllabus feels bigger this year. It usually is not. What changes is how quickly the early marks disappear — and they disappear for reasons that have very little to do with whether the mathematics is hard.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is organised into nine topics: Number; Algebra and graphs; Coordinate geometry; Geometry; Mensuration; Trigonometry; Transformations and vectors; Probability; and Statistics. A first term normally opens on Number and Algebra, which are the topics most students consider straightforward. That is precisely why the early losses are so frustrating: they are almost never losses of understanding.

Four habits account for most of them.

1. The answer is right, the method is invisible

Mathematics mark schemes award marks for method as well as for the final answer. A correct number written alone can therefore score less than an incorrect number reached by clearly shown, correct working — because the method marks are still available to the second student and not to the first.

This matters most in multi-step questions, where a single arithmetic slip early on would otherwise wipe out everything. Shown working protects the marks the student genuinely earned.

The habit to build is unglamorous: write the substitution line before the answer line, every time, even when the arithmetic is easy enough to do mentally.

2. The command word was not read

“Work out”, “show that”, “explain”, “describe” and “give a reason” ask for different things, and a mathematically correct response in the wrong form does not answer the question set.

“Show that” is the one that catches most students. It supplies the answer in the question, which means the answer earns nothing — the marks are entirely in the route to it. A student who writes the given answer with a tick beside it has scored zero on a question they could do.

Reading the command word aloud before starting is a small habit with an outsized return.

3. Rounding happened too early

Rounding an intermediate value and then continuing to calculate introduces an error that grows through the remaining steps. The final answer is then close, but not close enough, and accuracy marks go.

The rule is to carry full calculator accuracy through every intermediate step and round only the value that is actually being written as the final answer, to the degree of accuracy the question asks for. Where no accuracy is specified, three significant figures is the usual convention — but the question’s own instruction always wins.

4. Units and labels were left off

An unlabelled answer is an incomplete answer. In Mensuration especially, where a question moves between lengths, areas and volumes, the unit is part of what is being tested: cm, cm² and cm³ are not interchangeable, and writing the number without the unit leaves the examiner unable to award the mark for a correct one.

The same applies to money, time, and any answer given in context. If the question was set in a context, the answer belongs in that context.

What this looks like in practice

None of these four is a knowledge gap, which is what makes them worth attacking first. A student who already understands the topic can recover these marks inside a fortnight by changing how work is written down, rather than by learning anything new.

A practical starting point: take a piece of the student’s own marked work and sort every lost mark into one of the four categories above. The pattern is usually lopsided — most students lose marks predominantly in one or two of them, not evenly across all four. That is the one to drill.
