This guide covers Paper 1 Cognition and Behaviour, one of two equally-weighted papers in AQA GCSE Psychology (8182), first teaching 2017. There is no coursework – both papers are examined by written assessment.
Where this fits in 8182
Cognition and Behaviour introduces how psychologists study internal mental processes and how they change over time, and pairs a dedicated Research Methods unit with the content topics so that method and content are tested together rather than as a separate, isolated skill.

- 1.1 Memory — the processes of encoding, storage and retrieval; episodic, semantic and procedural memory; the multi-store model (sensory, short-term and long-term stores) and the coding, capacity and duration of each; primacy and recency effects; and memory as an active, reconstructive process, including factors affecting accuracy such as interference and false memories
- 1.2 Perception — the difference between sensation and perception; monocular and binocular visual cues and constancies; explanations for visual illusions; Gibson’s direct theory and Gregory’s constructivist theory of perception; and factors affecting perception such as culture, motivation, emotion and expectation
- 1.3 Development — early brain development, from simple neural structures in the womb through to the cortex, and how thinking and behaviour change across the lifespan
- 1.4 Research Methods — the methods psychologists use to investigate cognition and behaviour, including designing, conducting, and analysing and interpreting the results of practical research activities, applied across the other three sub-topics in this paper
How to approach it
Because Research Methods (1.4) is assessed alongside the content sub-topics rather than as a standalone unit, practise applying research methods questions directly to memory, perception and development scenarios rather than revising methods in isolation – this is the pairing the paper is built to test. Memory (1.1) and perception (1.2) both rely on being able to describe a model or process accurately and then evaluate it, so structure revision around description plus evaluation for each key study or theory, not description alone. Development (1.3) benefits from a clear timeline view of how thinking changes across childhood and adolescence, since exam questions often ask students to explain a change rather than just describe a stage.

Memory
Memory is processed in three stages — encoding (converting information into a usable form), storage (holding it), and retrieval (recovering it).
The multi-store model (Atkinson and Shiffrin) proposes three stores:

Information passes from sensory to short-term through attention, and to long-term through rehearsal. The model is supported by studies of primacy and recency effects, but criticised for treating each store as single and unitary.
Types of long-term memory: episodic (personal events), semantic (facts and knowledge), and procedural (skills, performed without conscious recall).
Forgetting is explained by interference — proactive, where old learning disrupts new, and retroactive, where new disrupts old — and by retrieval failure, where cues present at encoding are absent at recall.
Perception
Sensation is the raw data the senses receive; perception is the brain’s interpretation of it. The two can differ, which is what visual illusions demonstrate.
Gibson’s direct theory argues perception is bottom-up: the visual array contains enough information, through motion parallax, texture gradient and optic flow, to perceive accurately without inference.
Gregory’s constructivist theory argues perception is top-down: the brain makes inferences using prior knowledge and expectation, which is why illusions such as the Ponzo and Müller-Lyer figures deceive us — the brain misapplies depth cues.
Factors affecting perception include culture, motivation, emotion and expectation, illustrated by perceptual set.
Development and research methods
Piaget proposed development in stages, with schemas modified through assimilation and accommodation. Key concepts include object permanence, egocentrism and conservation.
Research methods run through the whole subject. Know experiments (laboratory, field, natural), observations, self-report through questionnaires and interviews, and correlation — and remember that correlation never establishes cause.
Ethical requirements: informed consent, no deception, right to withdraw, protection from harm, confidentiality and debriefing.
Worked example
A researcher finds a correlation of +0.8 between hours of revision and exam marks. What can and cannot be concluded?
CAN: a strong positive relationship exists -- more revision is
associated with higher marks
CANNOT: that revision CAUSES higher marks
Alternative explanations:
- a third variable, such as motivation, may drive both
- the direction could reverse: confident students may revise more
“Correlation does not equal causation” alone will not score — naming a plausible third variable is what earns the mark.
Common mistakes
Confusing sensation with perception. Mixing up proactive and retroactive interference. Describing Gibson’s theory as top-down. Saying a correlation “proves” or “shows” an effect. Giving capacity and duration of the short-term store the wrong way round. Listing ethical issues without saying how each would be addressed.
