This guide covers Paper 2 Social Context and Behaviour, the second of two equally-weighted papers in AQA GCSE Psychology (8182), first teaching 2017. Like Paper 1, it is examined entirely by written assessment, with research methods and mathematical skills assessed across all four topic areas rather than as a standalone unit.

Where this fits in 8182

Where Paper 1 looks inward at memory, perception and development, Paper 2 turns outward: how people behave in groups, how they communicate, what the brain contributes to behaviour, and how psychology understands and treats mental health difficulties. The four topics are taught as separate blocks but examined with the same skills as Paper 1 – description, application to novel scenarios, and evaluation – so a student who has built solid habits on Paper 1 content should apply the same technique here rather than treating Paper 2 as a fresh start.

  • 2.1 Social influence — how social factors (group size, anonymity, task difficulty) and dispositional factors (personality, expertise) affect conformity to majority influence, including Asch’s study; Milgram’s Agency Theory of obedience, covering agency, authority, culture and proximity, plus dispositional explanations including Adorno’s Authoritarian Personality theory; bystander behaviour, covering how social factors (presence of others, cost of helping) and dispositional factors (similarity to victim, expertise) affect intervention, including Piliavin’s subway study; and prosocial and antisocial behaviour in crowds, covering social factors (social loafing, deindividuation, culture) and dispositional factors (personality, morality)

How to approach it

The four topics in Paper 2 share a consistent shape worth noticing: each pairs a biological or “nature” explanation with a psychological or “nurture” explanation, and exam questions frequently ask students to compare the two rather than describe either alone. Build revision around that structure – for depression, know the serotonin account and the negative-schema account side by side, not as separate topics. The named studies (Asch, Milgram, Piliavin, Von Frisch, Penfield, Tulving, Wiles, Kaij) are also common sources of application questions, so know what each study actually did, not just the theory it supports. Brain and neuropsychology tends to be the topic students find least intuitive because it is the most biological; revising the four lobes and their functions with a labelled diagram, rather than a bullet list, usually makes the material stick better than rereading prose.

Common mistakes

Confusing Piaget’s view (language depends on thought) with Sapir-Whorf’s (thinking depends on language) – they are opposite claims. Describing conformity and obedience as the same process, when the specification treats them as distinct with different named studies. Missing the difference between addiction/dependence and substance misuse when defining addiction. Treating antidepressants and CBT as competing rather than complementary interventions – both appear on real mark schemes as valid treatment routes.

Worked example

A student is asked: “Compare the biological and psychological explanations of depression.” What does a strong answer include?

BIOLOGICAL: an imbalance of neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin,
            in the brain -- treated with antidepressant medication.

PSYCHOLOGICAL: negative schemas and attributions learned through
                experience -- treated with cognitive behaviour therapy.

COMPARISON: the biological account treats depression as something that
            happens TO the brain (nature); the psychological account
            treats it as something learned through experience
            (nurture). A strong answer notes that treatments often
            combine both routes in practice, and that neither
            explanation alone accounts for why some people exposed to
            the same biological or environmental risk factors do not
            develop depression.

Simply listing both explanations without comparing them, or without naming their associated treatment, will not access the higher mark bands – the question asks for comparison, not two descriptions side by side.

Quick revision checklist

  • Explain conformity and obedience separately, each with its own named study (Asch; Milgram) and both social and dispositional factors.
  • Describe bystander behaviour and crowd behaviour, distinguishing the factors that affect each.
  • State Piaget’s and Sapir-Whorf’s positions on language and thought as opposites, and give one piece of supporting cross-cultural evidence.
  • List the four brain lobes and one function of each, plus the three scanning techniques used in neuropsychology.
  • For both depression and addiction, know one biological and one psychological explanation, each paired with its matching intervention.
  • Practise applying every factor and study to a novel scenario, since Paper 2 – like Paper 1 – rewards application over pure recall.
