What the cognitive approach studies

How mental processes – memory, perception, thinking, decision-making – shape behaviour. Unlike the biological approach’s focus on physiology, the cognitive approach models the mind’s internal information-processing, often using computer-like models (input, processing, storage, output) as a way of representing mental activity that cannot be directly observed.

The same topic, three approaches

The syllabus guide’s key point: many topics are studied from more than one approach, and memory is the clearest example. Biologically, memory is examined through brain structures and neurochemistry. Cognitively, memory is examined through information-processing models (encoding, storage, retrieval) and factors affecting accuracy (such as reconstructive memory and schema). A strong Paper 1 answer recognises which approach a question is asking for, and does not blend biological and cognitive explanations together without being explicit about which is doing the explanatory work.

Worked example: applying the cognitive approach to memory reliability

A question asks candidates to use the cognitive approach to explain why eyewitness testimony can be unreliable.

Naming the specific cognitive concept, applying it directly to the scenario, then adding a genuine evaluative point is the structure Paper 1’s essay question rewards.

Building evaluation into every study

For every cognitive study or model learned, prepare not just its finding but its methodology and one evaluative point (a strength or limitation of how it was conducted or how applicable its model is to real-world behaviour) – Paper 1’s essay question specifically credits evaluation, not just accurate description.

Cognitive approach across the options too

The cognitive approach’s concepts do not stop being relevant once the core is finished — several options draw on cognitive explanations directly. Developmental psychology, for example, often uses cognitive models to explain how thinking and problem-solving change across the lifespan, and health psychology draws on cognitive concepts such as risk perception and health beliefs to explain behaviour change. Recognising where your chosen option overlaps with core cognitive content lets you reuse and deepen the same underlying knowledge rather than treating the core and the option as fully separate bodies of content to learn from scratch.

Linking to the internal assessment

Because the cognitive approach emphasises information-processing and the influence of factors like schema on judgment, many students design their experimental study (internal assessment) within this approach — for example, testing how a manipulated variable affects recall or decision-making. If your own IA sits within the cognitive approach, use this same vocabulary (encoding, schema, information-processing) to justify your design choices and discuss your findings, since consistency between your taught content and your own research strengthens the write-up’s methodological grounding.

Common mistakes

Blending biological and cognitive explanations of the same topic (e.g. memory) without being explicit about which approach a given point belongs to. Describing a cognitive model’s structure without applying it to a specific scenario or study finding. Treating research methodology, tested separately in Paper 3, as irrelevant to a cognitive-approach essay, when strong answers often reference how a study’s method affects how much its findings can be trusted.

Quick revision checklist

  • Learn at least one cognitive study or model with its finding, methodology, and one evaluative point.
  • Practise distinguishing a cognitive explanation of a topic from a biological explanation of the same topic.
  • Apply the cognitive approach’s key concepts (schema, reconstructive memory, information-processing) to a novel scenario, not just a memorised study.

Building genuine comparison with the other two approaches

Paper 1’s essay question sometimes explicitly asks students to compare two approaches applied to the same behaviour. Prepare at least one worked comparison in advance — for example, memory explained cognitively (information-processing, reconstructive memory) versus biologically (brain structures, neurochemistry) — so that on exam day you are adapting a rehearsed comparison rather than improvising one from separately memorised facts about each approach.
