Design, and the resultant development of new technologies, has given rise to profound changes in society, transforming how we access and process information, adapt our environment, communicate, solve problems, work and live. IB Middle Years Programme Design challenges students to apply practical and creative-thinking skills to solve design problems, encourages them to explore the role of design in historical and contemporary contexts, and raises their awareness of the responsibilities involved in making design decisions – including the environmental, social and ethical consequences a design choice can carry, which the course treats as inseparable from technical competence.
The design cycle
Inquiry and problem-solving are at the heart of the subject. MYP Design requires the use of the design cycle as a tool: it structures the inquiry and analysis of problems, the development of feasible solutions, the creation of solutions, and the testing and evaluation of the solution. A solution can be a model, prototype, product or system, independently created and developed by students. Unlike a fixed set-piece project repeated identically by every student, the design cycle is meant to be applied to a genuine problem of the student’s own framing, so two students in the same class can produce entirely different solutions while still being assessed against the same four criteria.
Aims
The course encourages and enables students to:
- enjoy the design process, and develop an appreciation of its elegance and power
- develop knowledge, understanding and skills from different disciplines to design and create solutions to problems using the design cycle
- use and apply technology effectively to access, process and communicate information, model and create solutions, and solve problems
- develop an appreciation of the impact of design innovations for life, global society and environments
- appreciate past, present and emerging design within cultural, political, social, historical and environmental contexts
- develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems
- act with integrity and honesty, and take responsibility for their own actions, including honestly reporting where a solution did not fully meet its own design specification.
How it’s assessed
MYP Design is assessed against four equally weighted criteria, each scored on an eight-point scale (1-8), rather than through an SL/HL exam model: Criterion A, Inquiring and analysing (identifying a design problem and researching it); Criterion B, Developing ideas (writing a design specification and generating a solution); Criterion C, Creating the solution (planning and making a prototype); and Criterion D, Evaluating (testing the solution and reflecting on how it could be improved).
Where schools opt into MYP eAssessment for an IB-validated result, Design is assessed by ePortfolio rather than an on-screen exam – students submit a complete design folder containing their design brief, specification, development work and evaluation, which is marked by their own teacher against published year-5 criteria and then externally moderated by the IB on a sampled basis. This ePortfolio route reflects that Design’s four criteria are best evidenced through a sustained body of process work, rather than through timed, on-screen questions, which suit knowledge-based subjects more naturally than a design process does.
The design cycle in more depth
The four assessment criteria map directly onto the four broad stages of the design cycle, which is what makes MYP Design’s assessment structure distinctive compared with a content-recall subject: a student is graded on the process of designing as much as on the finished artefact. Inquiring and analysing (Criterion A) means identifying a genuine problem and researching it properly before jumping to solutions. Developing ideas (Criterion B) means generating and justifying a design specification – the measurable criteria a successful solution must meet – rather than sketching a single idea and building it unreflectively. Creating the solution (Criterion C) is the practical planning and making stage, including a logical, time-managed plan for producing the chosen solution. Evaluating (Criterion D) requires testing the finished solution against the original specification and reflecting honestly on where it succeeded or fell short, not simply describing what was made.

Why “creating” is graded on planning, not just craft
A common misconception is that Criterion C rewards how polished or professionally finished the physical prototype looks. In fact, the criterion is weighted toward the quality of planning – a logical, appropriately detailed and accurately followed plan – alongside competent making skill, so a student with a clear, well-justified production plan they demonstrably followed can score well even if the final prototype has minor practical flaws, provided those flaws are honestly addressed in the Criterion D evaluation.
How this connects to further study
The design cycle taught in MYP Design maps closely onto DP Design Technology’s own design process, so a student who has internalised the specification-driven approach of Criterion B, and the honest, evidence-based evaluation of Criterion D, enters DP Design Technology with a head start on its own internally assessed coursework, which follows a very similar inquiry-to-evaluation structure.
