The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16, providing a framework of learning that emphasizes intellectual challenge and connects traditional subjects to the real world.

The four branches of MYP mathematics

The framework for MYP Mathematics outlines four branches of mathematical study:

  1. Numerical and abstract reasoning
  2. Thinking with models
  3. Spatial reasoning
  4. Reasoning with data

These four branches together span both the traditionally “abstract” side of mathematics (numbers, algebra, geometry) and its applied, data-driven side, reflecting a deliberately broad view of what counts as mathematical thinking.

The study of mathematics is a fundamental part of a balanced education, promoting a powerful universal language, analytical reasoning and problem-solving skills that develop logical, abstract and critical thinking – skills the MYP treats as valuable well beyond mathematics itself, transferring directly into the analytical demands of every other subject group. MYP mathematics promotes both inquiry and application, helping students develop problem-solving techniques that transcend the discipline – an emphasis that distinguishes it from a purely procedural approach to mathematics focused only on executing known techniques correctly.

Aims

The course encourages and enables students to:

  • enjoy mathematics, develop curiosity and begin to appreciate its elegance and power
  • develop an understanding of the principles and nature of mathematics
  • communicate clearly and confidently in a variety of contexts
  • develop logical, critical and creative thinking
  • develop confidence, perseverance and independence in mathematical thinking and problem-solving
  • develop powers of generalization and abstraction.

How it’s assessed

Unlike the DP, MYP Mathematics has no SL/HL split and no single end-of-course exam that alone fixes the final grade. Instead, teachers assess work throughout each year against four equally weighted MYP criteria, each scored on an eight-point scale (1-8) with published grade descriptors: Criterion A, Knowing and understanding; Criterion B, Investigating patterns; Criterion C, Communicating; and Criterion D, Applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student’s achievement level in each criterion is awarded against the descriptor that best fits their work, not by totalling exam marks – a fundamentally different logic from a points-based mark scheme, and one that families new to the MYP sometimes need explaining explicitly, since it changes how a student’s year-on-year progress should actually be read.

Schools that want an IB-validated result at the end of MYP year 5 can opt into MYP eAssessment: a 2-hour on-screen exam (available for standard and extended mathematics) built from three tasks – knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts – each mapped back to the same four criteria. Not every MYP school uses eAssessment; many assess entirely through classroom-based, criterion- referenced coursework – both routes lead to the same four-criterion achievement profile, so choosing not to sit eAssessment does not mean a student’s mathematical achievement is assessed any less rigorously, only that the evidence comes from ongoing coursework rather than a single end-of-programme exam.

Schools can additionally choose to offer MYP Mathematics at one of two levels of challenge: standard mathematics, which provides a sound grounding in core mathematical principles, or extended mathematics, which supplements the standard curriculum with additional topics and greater depth. Which level, if any choice is offered at all, a student follows is normally decided by the school in consultation with the student and family, based on prior attainment and future academic direction. Both levels are assessed against the same four criteria, and both are designed to prepare students for the demands of the DP-level mathematics courses that follow at ages 16-19, though the two DP routes differ substantially in emphasis and pace.

The four branches, applied together

The four branches – numerical and abstract reasoning, thinking with models, spatial reasoning, and reasoning with data – are not taught as four isolated units but woven through the course’s inquiry-based tasks, since a single real-world problem often draws on more than one branch at once (a statistics investigation, for instance, combines numerical reasoning and reasoning with data). This mirrors the way the four assessment criteria are applied to the same body of work rather than to four separate pieces of work, reinforcing that MYP Mathematics assesses connected mathematical thinking rather than four unrelated skill sets.

Standard versus extended — a genuine choice, not a fixed track

Because standard and extended mathematics are assessed against the same four criteria, moving between the two levels (where a school permits it) does not require learning an entirely different assessment structure — only additional content and depth. This is a meaningfully different model from many other pre-16 systems, where “higher” and “foundation” tiers can cap the maximum available grade; in MYP Mathematics, the criteria and their descriptors are identical regardless of which level a student is following, and the difference lies in the mathematical content itself.

Preparing for DP-level mathematics

Both standard and extended MYP mathematics are explicitly designed with the demands of DP mathematics in mind, though the DP itself offers two distinct routes — Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation — each with its own SL/HL split. Extended MYP mathematics, with its additional topics and depth, is typically the stronger preparation for DP Analysis and Approaches HL specifically, though the right DP route for any given student depends on their individual strengths and intended university pathway, and is worth discussing directly with a school’s DP coordinator well before subject choices are finalised.
