Condensed recall notes for Topic 2 Energy and the Environment, the second of nine topics in Cambridge O Level Environmental Management (5014), 2025–2026 series. Use these alongside the full study guide on Topic 2 for explanation and worked examples — these notes are for fast recall of the topic’s six sub-sections in the final stretch of revision.

2.1 Fossil fuel formation

  • Candidates must be able to describe the formation of the three named fossil fuels: coal, oil and gas.
  • This is a pure description outcome — no evaluation is required here, only accurate recall of the formation process for each fuel.

2.2 Energy resources and the generation of electricity

  • Classify each named energy resource as non-renewable or renewable:
    • Non-renewable: fossil fuels, nuclear power (using uranium)
    • Renewable: biofuels (bioethanol, biogas, wood), geothermal power, hydro-electric power, tidal power, wave power, solar power, wind power
  • Describe how each resource is used to generate electricity.
  • Describe environmental, economic and social advantages and disadvantages of each — a complete answer touches all three dimensions, not just environmental impact.

2.3 Energy demand

  • Describe and explain the factors affecting energy demand:
    • Domestic demand
    • Industrial demand
    • Transport
    • Personal and national wealth
    • Climate
  • Exam answers should connect a named factor to a specific reason for rising or falling demand, not just list the factors.

2.4 Conservation and management of energy resources

  • Strategies for efficient management, with named examples:
    • Reducing consumption: insulation, turning off electrical devices, energy-efficient devices and vehicles
    • Energy recovery: using waste cooking oil for energy
    • Exploiting existing energy sources
    • Education for energy conservation
    • Transport policies
    • Research and development of new resources, including fracking

2.5 Impact of oil pollution

  • Causes: off-shore oil extraction, pipelines, shipping.
  • Impacts on marine and coastal ecosystems: birds, marine mammals, coral reefs, beaches.
  • Learn causes and impacts as a linked pair — an exam answer that names a cause should be able to state its specific ecosystem impact.

2.6 Management of oil pollution

  • Strategies for reducing oil spills:
    • MARPOL (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships)
    • Double-hulled oil tankers
  • Strategies for minimising spill impacts:
    • Booms, detergent sprays, skimmers
  • Case study requirement: candidates must study the impact and management of a specific named oil pollution event — generic answers without a real case study example lose marks here.

Command word reminders

“Describe” questions in this topic (2.1, most of 2.2, 2.5) want factual detail stated plainly, without justification. “Explain” questions (2.3’s demand factors, parts of 2.4) require a stated reason or mechanism, not just a named factor. “Discuss” (used in 2.6 for spill reduction and impact-minimising strategies) expects candidates to weigh more than one strategy, ideally naming a strength and a limitation for each rather than listing strategies without comment.

Quick recall checklist

  • Can I describe how each of coal, oil and gas forms?
  • Can I correctly sort all eight named energy resources into renewable and non-renewable?
  • Do I know all five factors affecting energy demand, with a reason for each?
  • Can I name at least four energy conservation strategies, including fracking as an R&D example?
  • Do I know the difference between oil pollution causes and impacts, and can I pair each cause with an ecosystem effect?
  • Do I have a real, named oil pollution case study prepared, with both its impact and its management response?

Common mistakes

  • Describing only environmental advantages/disadvantages for energy resources in 2.2, omitting the economic and social dimensions the syllabus explicitly requires.
  • Listing energy demand factors without explaining them — “climate” alone is not a complete answer; state how climate affects demand (e.g. heating or cooling needs).
  • Confusing oil pollution prevention (MARPOL, double hulls) with spill response (booms, detergent, skimmers) — these are two distinct strategy categories in 2.6, not one list.
  • Relying on a generic description of an oil spill instead of a specific, named case study, when the syllabus requires one.

Connecting Topic 2 back to Topic 1

Topic 1 (Rocks and minerals and their exploitation) and Topic 2 overlap where fossil fuel extraction is concerned — coal, oil and gas are non-renewable energy resources here in 2.2, but their extraction methods and the environmental problems that extraction causes echo Topic 1’s own content on rock and mineral extraction. Exam questions occasionally draw on both topics for a single scenario (for example, a question about a specific extraction site’s environmental impact), so revising the two topics side by side, rather than fully separately, reduces the risk of missing a cross-topic connection the examiner has built into the question.

How to approach it

Build a single table for 2.2 with eight rows (one per named energy resource) and columns for renewable/non-renewable, how electricity is generated, and one advantage plus one disadvantage in each of the environmental, economic and social categories — this table transfers directly into most 2.2 exam answers. For the oil pollution case study in 2.6, choose one well-documented real event (for example, a named tanker spill or pipeline incident) and prepare it in enough depth to answer both an “impact” question and a “management” question from the same example, since the syllabus explicitly expects one case study to serve both purposes.
