Condensed recall notes for Topic 2 Summary Representation of Data, the second of twelve topics in Cambridge O Level Statistics (4040), 2025–2027 series. Use these alongside the full study guide on Topic 2 for worked examples — these notes are for fast recall of the four sub-topics in the final stretch of revision.

2.1 Classification and representation in tabular form

  • Data can be classified and displayed in ordinary frequency tables.
  • Two-way tables are explicitly named — practise reading a value from the intersection of a row and column, and calculating row or column totals from a two-way table.
  • Know the difference between a table that simply lists values and one that cross-classifies two variables at once.

2.2 Representation in pictorial or diagrammatic form

The syllabus names a wide range of diagram types candidates must be able to construct and read:

  • Pictograms
  • Pie charts, comparative pie charts
  • Venn diagrams
  • Bar charts, sectional (stacked) bar charts, percentage bar charts, dual bar charts
  • Box-and-whisker diagrams
  • Stem-and-leaf diagrams (including back-to-back stem-and-leaf diagrams)

This is the longest single list of named techniques in Topic 2, so treat it as a checklist: for each diagram type, be able to both construct it from raw data and read a value or comparison from an already-drawn example.

2.3 The purpose and use of various forms of representation, their advantages and disadvantages

  • This sub-topic asks when to use which diagram, not just how to draw one.
  • Learn one clear advantage and one clear limitation for each diagram type in 2.2 — for example, pie charts show proportion clearly but are harder to compare precise values across categories than a bar chart; stem-and-leaf diagrams preserve the original data values but become unwieldy with a very large data set.
  • Comparative pie charts and dual/sectional bar charts exist specifically to compare two or more data sets — know when a comparison, not just a single display, is what the question actually needs.

2.4 Interpretation of data presented in tabular, pictorial or diagrammatic form

  • Candidates must be able to read values, compare categories, and draw conclusions directly from a table or diagram provided in the exam.
  • This sub-topic is tested constantly across the whole paper, not just in Topic 2 questions — almost every Statistics exam question includes some given data to interpret before further calculation is possible.

Command word reminders

“Represent” questions expect a correctly drawn, correctly labelled diagram — an unlabelled axis or missing key is marked down even if the underlying data is plotted accurately. “Interpret” questions expect a sentence-level conclusion, not just a number read off the diagram: if asked to interpret a comparative pie chart, state what the comparison actually shows (for example, which category grew and by roughly how much) rather than only restating the percentages shown. “Discuss advantages and disadvantages” always expects both sides for at least one diagram type — a one-sided answer cannot reach full marks on this sub-topic.

Connecting Topic 2 forward to Topic 3

Grouped frequency distributions, covered next in Topic 3, build directly on this topic’s tabular and pictorial skills — a grouped frequency table is itself a specialised tabular form, and histograms and frequency polygons (introduced in Topic 3) are close relatives of the bar charts and diagrams covered here. Treating 2.1–2.4 as foundational rather than a topic to finish and move past pays off directly once frequency distributions are introduced.

Quick recall checklist

  • Can I read a value from the intersection of a two-way table?
  • Can I list all the named diagram types in 2.2 without missing one?
  • For each diagram type, do I have one advantage and one limitation ready?
  • Can I explain when a comparative or dual display (comparative pie chart, dual bar chart) is the right choice over a single one?
  • Given an unfamiliar table or diagram, can I extract a specific value, a comparison, and a conclusion within a few minutes?

Common mistakes

  • Confusing sectional (stacked) bar charts with dual bar charts — sectional charts stack categories within one bar per group; dual charts place separate bars side by side.
  • Naming a diagram’s advantage without a matching limitation, when “advantages and disadvantages” questions expect both.
  • Skipping straight to calculation in interpretation questions without first reading what the table or diagram actually shows — misreading a table is a common, avoidable source of a wrong final answer.
  • Treating box-and-whisker and stem-and-leaf diagrams as interchangeable — they display different summary information (five key values versus the full data set retained in ordered form).

How to approach it

Because 2.2’s diagram list is long, practise construction and interpretation together rather than separately: for every diagram type, draw one from a small data set, then immediately answer three interpretation questions about your own drawing (a specific value, a comparison, a conclusion). This dual practice covers both 2.2 and 2.4 in the same session and builds the speed needed for exam conditions, where most Statistics questions combine a “read the data” step with a “do something with it” step in a single question.
