Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) is an interdisciplinary IB Diploma Programme course, encompassing both the sciences and individuals and societies, offered at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). ESS combines methodologies, techniques and knowledge associated with both disciplines, sitting distinctly apart from the DP’s other science and humanities subjects precisely because it does not belong wholly to either.
What the course covers
ESS is a complex, contemporary course engaging students with 21st century environmental issues, requiring a diverse set of skills and understanding from different disciplines – from ecosystem structure and biogeochemical cycles on the scientific side, to resource management, environmental economics and ethical decision-making on the societal side. Students develop a scientific approach through explorations of environmental systems, and acquire understandings and methods from individuals and societies subjects while studying sustainability issues within social, cultural, economic, political and ethical contexts. Because of its interdisciplinary nature, students can choose to have ESS count as either a sciences or an individuals-and-societies course, or as both – in the latter case, freeing up an additional subject choice from any other subject group, which is a genuinely useful piece of flexibility for students who want to concentrate their remaining subject choices elsewhere, such as an additional language or a second arts subject.
Aims
The DP describes ESS’s aims as encompassing both scientific method and societal understanding equally, which distinguishes it from a single-discipline science course:
ESS aims to empower and equip students to:
- develop understanding of their own environmental impact, in the broader context of humanity’s impact on the Earth and its biosphere
- develop knowledge of diverse perspectives to address issues of sustainability
- engage with and evaluate the tensions around environmental issues using critical thinking
- develop a systems approach providing a holistic lens for exploring environmental issues
- be inspired to engage with environmental issues across local and global contexts, and confident participating as actively responsible citizens.
How it’s assessed
Environmental Systems and Societies is assessed through a combination of external written examinations and an internally assessed individual investigation, with the balance shifting slightly between Standard Level and Higher Level. Two written papers make up the external assessment – 75% of the final grade at SL and 80% at HL – combining short-answer, data-based and extended-response questions that draw on both the scientific and societal strands of the course. Because the same core content is examined at both levels, HL’s higher external weighting reflects the more demanding style of question set, rather than a longer or additional syllabus to prepare for.
The internal assessment is worth 25% at SL and 20% at HL. It takes the form of an individual investigation, normally built around fieldwork, in which students formulate their own research question, collect primary data, apply relevant ESS techniques to analyse it, and draw evidence-based conclusions in a written report capped at 3,000 words and around 10 teaching hours of work. Because ESS is designed to be studied as either a sciences or an individuals-and-societies subject, this fieldwork-based investigation is deliberately built to draw on methods from both disciplines rather than treating them separately – a strong investigation typically combines a scientific data-collection method (such as quadrat sampling or water-quality testing) with an analysis that also considers the social, economic or political dimensions of the issue under study, rather than treating the fieldwork as a purely scientific exercise.
SL and HL cover the same core content
Unlike most DP sciences, where HL adds substantial extra content beyond SL, ESS is taught to the same core syllabus content at both levels – there is no separate “HL-only” strand of topics the way there is in, for example, DP Biology or Physics. What changes between SL and HL is depth of treatment and the demand of assessment: HL students are expected to engage with greater complexity and more sophisticated evaluation of the same material, examined through papers that ask for more extended, synthesised responses rather than through additional syllabus content. This is worth knowing early, since students sometimes assume (incorrectly, based on how other DP sciences work) that there is a distinct list of HL-only topics to seek out and prioritise.
Why ESS counts toward two subject groups
Every other DP subject belongs to exactly one of the six subject groups. ESS is the DP’s one genuinely interdisciplinary course, and a student can use it to satisfy either the Group 4 (sciences) requirement or the Group 3 (individuals and societies) requirement – or, in some DP combinations, both at once, which frees up an entire additional subject slot for something else in the student’s programme. Confirming with a school’s DP coordinator exactly how ESS is being counted in a given student’s subject combination is essential, since this decision affects which other subject groups still need to be filled.
Where ESS sits in a typical DP combination
Because ESS blends scientific and social-science approaches, it is often chosen by students who want the analytical rigour of a science course without committing to a full discrete-science subject group requirement, or by students building a combination weighted toward the humanities who still want a genuinely scientific methodology represented in their programme. Either way, the course still demands the same practical, data-handling and fieldwork skills expected of any DP science – it is not a “lighter” alternative to Biology, Chemistry or Physics, simply a differently structured one.
