This guide covers the full syllabus structure of IB Diploma Programme Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS), for first assessment 2026, at both Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL). It complements the subject overview and the assessment revision notes already on the site by setting out what is actually taught – the concept-based foundation, the eight numbered syllabus topics, the HL-only lenses, and the experimental programme.
ESS is built around a concept-based syllabus. All students – SL and HL – share a foundations unit introducing three unifying concepts (perspectives, systems and sustainability), one internally assessed individual investigation, and a collaborative sciences project. The SL course runs to 100 recommended teaching hours of syllabus content; the HL course extends this to 190 hours, with the extra depth concentrated in the later topics and in three HL-only lenses that do not exist for SL students at all.

IB DIPLOMA PROGRAMME ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS AND SOCIETIES – SYLLABUS CONTENT

- Topic 1: Foundations (16 / 35 hours) – the starting point for
both levels, built around the three unifying concepts:
- 1.1 Perspectives (3 hours) – differing individual and collective worldviews on environmental issues.
- 1.2 Systems (5 hours) – systems theory as a tool for understanding environmental structures and processes.
- 1.3 Sustainability (8 hours) – resource management and the idea of sustainability as central to the whole course.
- Topic 2: Ecology (22 / 26 hours).
- Topic 3: Biodiversity and conservation (13 hours, both levels).
- Topic 4: Water (12 / 25 hours).
- Topic 5: Land (8 / 15 hours).
- Topic 6: Atmosphere and climate change (10 / 23 hours).
- Topic 7: Natural resources (10 / 18 hours).
- Topic 8: Human populations and urban systems (9 / 15 hours).
- HL lens a: Environmental law (5 hours, HL only).
- HL lens b: Environmental and ecological economics (7 hours, HL only).
- HL lens c: Environmental ethics (5 hours, HL only).
- Experimental programme (50 hours, both levels): 30 hours of practical work (including the collaborative sciences project) plus 10 hours of scientific investigation, providing the evidence base for the individual assessment.
The syllabus’s own subtopic detail below Topic 1 is not itemised in the public subject brief this guide is sourced from – only topic names, structure and teaching hours are published there. Topic-level detail (Topics 2-8 subtopic breakdowns) sits in the IB’s internal subject guide, distributed through the Programme Resource Centre, not in the public brief, so it is not reproduced here.
Why Topic 1 gets disproportionate attention
Topic 1’s three concepts – perspectives, systems and sustainability – are not a one-off introduction: the specification explicitly says they are “revisited throughout the course,” meaning every later topic is implicitly assessed against how well a student can apply these three lenses, not just recall content. A student who treats Topic 1 as a short warm-up unit rather than the interpretive framework for everything that follows tends to write descriptive rather than analytical answers on Papers 1 and 2, because they lack the vocabulary (carrying capacity, ecological footprint, environmental value systems, positive/negative feedback) that the specification expects to see threaded through answers on water, land, atmosphere or resources.
The HL-only lenses
HL students study the same eight core topics as SL students, but with greater depth and breadth throughout, and then apply three additional lenses that SL students never encounter:
- Environmental law – how legal frameworks are used to address environmental issues, at local, national and international scale.
- Environmental and ecological economics – how economic tools and models (including the valuation of ecosystem services) are applied to environmental decision-making.
- Environmental ethics – the range of value systems and ethical positions that shape how individuals and societies respond to environmental issues.
Because these lenses require HL students to reprocess content they already studied through the core topics – explaining, for example, a water-scarcity issue through a legal lens, an economic lens and an ethical lens in turn – they are best revised topic-by-topic alongside the core content they extend, rather than as a separate block at the end of the course.
The experimental programme
Fifty hours, shared by SL and HL, split into practical work (30 hours, including the group-based collaborative sciences project) and scientific investigation (10 hours). This underpins the internally assessed individual investigation, in which each student designs and carries out their own fieldwork-based enquiry, gathers primary data, and writes an evidence-based report capped at 3,000 words. Because the collaborative sciences project sits inside the practical-work hours rather than being separately assessed, its main value to a student’s final grade is the data-handling and investigative skills it builds for the individual investigation, not marks of its own.
How to approach it
Start by mapping the eight topics against their teaching hours: topics with a large HL-hours gap relative to SL (Topic 6, Atmosphere and climate change, nearly doubles from 10 to 23 hours; Topic 4, Water, roughly doubles from 12 to 25) signal where HL students should expect the most additional depth, and therefore where revision time is most efficiently weighted. Because Topic 1’s three concepts recur across every other topic, revise them first and explicitly practise using their vocabulary when summarising each later topic, rather than revising Topic 1 in isolation and moving on. HL students should treat each of the three lenses as a way of re-reading content they already know, not as new factual material – for each core topic, ask “what would a legal, economic and ethical analysis of this issue look like?” as a standing revision question. For the individual investigation, because it is scored against a fixed evidence-based-report structure capped at 3,000 words, drafting a clear, testable research question early and checking it against the assessment criteria before collecting data saves far more marks than trying to rescue an unfocused question after the fact.
