Why the IA is weighted slightly higher at SL
The fieldwork investigation carries a larger share of the final grade at SL (25%) than at HL (20%), the reverse of the pattern in some other DP subjects – this reflects that HL students sit proportionally more or more demanding written-paper content overall, so the balance shifts slightly toward the external papers at HL even though the fieldwork skills and IA criteria themselves are identical at both levels.

The internal assessment

Why ESS is different from a single-group science or humanities subject
ESS can count as a sciences subject, an individuals-and-societies subject, or both — freeing up an extra subject choice if counted as both. Both written papers combine short-answer, data-based and extended-response questions drawing on the scientific and societal strands.
The internal assessment in more depth
The fieldwork investigation is graded against criteria covering the whole research process: formulating a focused research question suited to fieldwork; justifying and applying an appropriate methodology capable of generating reliable primary data; processing and presenting that data (including basic statistical treatment where relevant); and reaching evidence-based conclusions that are then evaluated for strengths and limitations, with specific, feasible suggestions for improving the investigation. Because ESS draws on both scientific and societal methods, a strong IA typically integrates both dimensions explicitly – for example, connecting a measured environmental change to its social, economic or policy implications – rather than treating the fieldwork as a purely scientific exercise that stops at the data.
Command terms across the papers
Both written papers use the same command-term glossary as the other DP sciences and individuals-and-societies subjects: state, identify and outline at the lower end; explain, compare and suggest in the middle; evaluate, discuss and to what extent at the top, where a reasoned judgement weighing multiple perspectives or pieces of evidence is required. Because ESS explicitly combines scientific and societal content, a strong “evaluate” or “discuss” answer in this subject often needs to weigh evidence from both strands together – for example, evaluating an environmental policy requires considering both its scientific effectiveness and its social/economic feasibility, not just one dimension.
Why ESS’s dual nature shapes its assessment structure
Because ESS can be counted toward either the sciences group or the individuals-and-societies group of the Diploma’s six subject groups (or toward both, which frees up an additional subject choice elsewhere in the Diploma), its assessment is deliberately built to be defensible as either a science or a humanities subject. This is why both written papers combine short-answer, data-based and extended-response questions that draw on scientific methodology (measurement, data analysis, experimental design) and societal analysis (policy, ethics, economics, human systems) side by side, rather than separating the two strands into different papers – a structural choice that reflects the subject’s own stated aim of examining environmental issues through the combined lens of natural science and human society.
How this compares to a single-group science
Unlike Biology, Chemistry or Physics, ESS has no separate collaborative sciences project requirement and no theory-of-knowledge-style science-specific internal assessment split – fieldwork is the sole internally assessed component, carrying more weight (20-25%) than the equivalent single internal assessment in the other sciences (20% each). This reflects ESS’s greater reliance on primary field data collection as its core investigative skill, as opposed to the more laboratory-based investigations typical of the other three DP sciences.
Exam traps
- Treating the IA as a pure science lab report, missing the required societal/sustainability dimension.
- Exceeding the 3,000-word cap, or building an investigation that doesn’t rely on primary data collected firsthand.
