This guide covers Topic 1 — Foundations, for IB Diploma Programme Environmental Systems and Societies, first assessment 2026. Topic 1 is deliberately the first thing every ESS student studies, and, as the full syllabus guide explains, its three concepts are explicitly “revisited throughout the course” rather than assessed once and set aside.
Where this fits in the syllabus
Because the specification explicitly revisits perspectives, systems and sustainability throughout every later topic, a student who has genuinely internalised this vocabulary can apply it to unfamiliar content on water, land, atmosphere or resources without having studied that content in the same depth as a student who has not built this foundation. Any Topic 4–8 question can, in principle, ask a student to identify the environmental value system underlying a described policy position, model a described environmental process as a system with named inputs, outputs and feedback loops, or evaluate whether a described resource-use pattern is within its natural income. Treating Topic 1 as a short warm-up rather than a recurring toolkit is the single most common reason for descriptive, rather than analytical, ESS exam answers.

IB DP ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS AND SOCIETIES — TOPIC 1: FOUNDATIONS
- 1.1 Perspectives (3 hours) — differing individual and collective worldviews on environmental issues, centred on the environmental value system (EVS): a particular world view or paradigm shaping how an individual or group perceives and evaluates environmental issues, influenced by cultural, religious, economic and socio-political context. Three broad EVS categories recur across the course: ecocentrism (nature-centred, valuing the environment for its own sake), anthropocentrism (human-centred, managing the environment for humanity’s benefit), and technocentrism (belief that technology and human ingenuity can solve environmental problems)
- 1.2 Systems (5 hours) — systems theory as a tool for understanding environmental structures and processes: a system is an assemblage of interrelated parts interacting coherently; inputs and outputs are energy or matter crossing the system boundary; a feedback loop is a mechanism where a change in a system’s output affects its own input, distinguished into negative feedback (stabilising, moving the system back toward equilibrium) and positive feedback (amplifying, pushing the system further from its original state); systems are further classified as open (exchange both energy and matter), closed (exchange only energy), or isolated (exchange neither)
- 1.3 Sustainability (8 hours, the largest of Topic 1’s three sub-topics) — resource management and sustainability, framed as meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own; natural capital (the stock of natural resources providing goods and services of value) versus natural income (the sustainable yield obtainable from that capital); renewable versus non-renewable natural capital; the ecological footprint as an environmental indicator measuring the area of land and water required to sustainably provide consumed resources and assimilate associated waste
How to approach it
Always apply an EVS category to a specific described scenario or stakeholder, rather than only defining the three terms in the abstract — justify which specific words or actions in a case study indicate ecocentrism, anthropocentrism or technocentrism. Keep negative and positive feedback precisely distinct from a value judgement: “negative” here means stabilising, not “bad,” and confusing the two is one of the most common ESS exam errors. Treat “sustainable” as a threshold rather than a simple yes/no label — a resource is being used sustainably only while consumption stays within its natural income, and the same resource can move between sustainable and unsustainable use over time as consumption changes.
Worked example: applying Topic 1 concepts to a Topic 4 scenario
A case study describes a freshwater aquifer being extracted for irrigation at a rate exceeding its natural recharge rate.
Systems framing: the aquifer is a system with inputs (rainfall
recharge) and outputs (extraction for
irrigation); a positive feedback loop could
emerge if falling water tables push farmers to
drill deeper and extract even faster
Sustainability natural capital = the water stored in the
framing: aquifer; natural income = the recharge rate;
because extraction exceeds recharge, the
resource is being used UNSUSTAINABLY -- capital
is being depleted, not just income drawn down
EVS framing: a policy prioritising irrigation output above
all else reflects an anthropocentric value
system; a policy capping extraction at the
recharge rate reflects a more ecocentric or
precautionary stance
Applying all three Topic 1 lenses to the same scenario, rather than using only one, is what demonstrates the “revisited throughout the course” application the specification expects.
Common mistakes
Defining negative feedback as “bad” and positive feedback as “good” — both terms describe the direction of the effect on the system (stabilising versus amplifying), not a value judgement. Confusing natural capital with natural income — capital is the stock, income is the sustainable yield from that stock. Applying an EVS label without evidence from the scenario. Treating sustainability as a fixed property of a resource rather than a threshold that depends on the current rate of consumption relative to natural income.
