How MYP Sciences Is Assessed: Revision Notes

Why there’s no SL/HL split at MYP level
Like every MYP subject, Sciences does not distinguish Standard and Higher Level in the DP sense – differentiation happens through the depth and sophistication a student demonstrates within each criterion’s band descriptors, applied consistently whether the school teaches discrete or integrated science.

Available in biology, chemistry, physics or integrated sciences — three tasks:

The investigation-skills task is worth half the total marks — the single biggest component.
The four criteria in more depth
Each criterion is assessed against level descriptors organised in bands: criterion A rewards accurate recall and increasingly nuanced application of scientific understanding to unfamiliar contexts; criterion B rewards formulating a testable hypothesis or research question and designing a method capable of investigating it fairly; criterion C rewards accurate data collection and processing, appropriate presentation (tables, graphs), and drawing conclusions genuinely supported by the data obtained; criterion D rewards discussing the real-life applications and implications of scientific knowledge, including its social, ethical or environmental dimensions, rather than describing the science alone. A common weakness across criteria B and C is designing an investigation without a genuinely fair-test variable structure (identifying and controlling variables explicitly) – since this underpins how strongly a conclusion drawn from the data can actually be trusted.
Why investigation skills carry half the eAssessment marks
The 50 marks allocated to inquiring, designing, processing and evaluating (criteria B and C combined) reflect that MYP Sciences is built around developing genuine scientific method, not primarily content recall – a student who has memorised facts thoroughly but never practised designing a fair investigation, processing raw data into a meaningful graph, or evaluating a method’s reliability will underperform relative to their content knowledge. Revision that includes hands-on or past-investigation practice, not only reading and recall, is proportionally more valuable given this weighting than for many other MYP subjects.
How discrete and integrated science courses align
Whether a school teaches Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate discrete subjects or combines them into an integrated science course, the same four criteria and the same eAssessment structure apply – the underlying scientific method being assessed (formulating a question, investigating it, processing data, evaluating results, and considering real-world implications) is identical regardless of how the content is organised into courses. This means revision strategies that work for a discrete-science MYP student (practising investigation design, data processing, evaluation) transfer directly to an integrated-science student, and vice versa.
How MYP Sciences connects forward to DP sciences
The investigative skills built through criteria B and C – formulating a research question, designing a fair method, processing and evaluating data – map directly onto the internal assessment students will complete in whichever DP science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) they progress to, where an individually designed and written-up investigation is a formally graded, externally moderated component worth 20% of the final grade. Students who have genuinely engaged with MYP Sciences’s investigation-skills criteria, rather than focusing revision narrowly on content recall, typically find the DP internal assessment’s expectations considerably more familiar.
Exam traps
- Focusing revision only on recall (Criterion A, 25 marks) and neglecting investigation-skills practice (Criteria B+C, 50 marks).
- Treating “reflecting on impacts” (Criterion D) as an optional add-on rather than a formally assessed criterion.
- Assuming discrete-science students are assessed differently from integrated-science students — the criteria are identical either way.
