This guide covers Topic 1 The Nature and Variety of Living Organisms, the first of five topics in Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology (4BI1), first teaching September 2017. The qualification is untiered and linear, assessed across two written papers.

Topic 1 establishes the characteristics that define living organisms and the basics of cell structure and classification, providing the foundation for the four topics that follow: Structures and functions in living organisms, Reproduction and inheritance, Ecology and the environment, and Use of biological resources.

PEARSON EDEXCEL INTERNATIONAL GCSE BIOLOGY (4BI1) — TOPIC 1 THE NATURE AND VARIETY OF LIVING ORGANISMS

Topic 1 covers two named sub-topics: the characteristics common to all living organisms, and the variety of living organisms, including their classification into major groups. In total the specification sets out four numbered outcomes across these two sub-topics. The structure and function of plant and animal cells, and the movement of substances into and out of cells, are Topic 2 sub-topics and are covered in the Cell structure and biological molecules guide.

How to approach it

Because this topic sets out a small number of named outcomes, work through the specification’s own points systematically when revising, checking off each one, rather than relying on general topic summaries that can miss specific testable detail. Classification questions often ask candidates to place an unfamiliar organism into a group based on described features, so practise applying classification criteria to new examples rather than only memorising named groups. (Cell structure and the movement of substances by diffusion and osmosis are tested in Topic 2, not here.)

Characteristics of living organisms

All living organisms share eight characteristics, remembered as MRS GREN: movement, respiration, sensitivity, growth, reproduction, excretion, nutrition — with the eighth, control of internal conditions, often added as homeostasis.

The distinction that catches candidates out is excretion versus egestion. Excretion removes waste made by the body’s own reactions, such as carbon dioxide and urea. Egestion removes undigested food that never entered the cells at all.

Growth is defined precisely as a permanent increase in dry mass, not simply an increase in mass or size. An organism that takes up water increases in mass but not in dry mass, so water uptake alone does not count as growth — the “dry” qualifier is what the mark scheme is checking for.

The five kingdoms

Fungi feed saprotrophically: they secrete enzymes onto food outside the body, digest it externally, and absorb the products. Many fungi are multicellular with hyphae forming a mycelium, though yeast is single-celled.

Prokaryotes have no nucleus, mitochondria or chloroplasts. Their DNA is a circular loop, often with plasmids.

Storage compounds also distinguish the kingdoms and are examined more often than expected: plants store carbohydrate as starch and sucrose, while animals and fungi both store carbohydrate as glycogen. This is easy to mix up, since fungi are sometimes wrongly assumed to store starch alongside plants simply because both are non-animal kingdoms — the correct pairing is by nutrition type, not by “plant-like” appearance.

Viruses

Viruses sit outside the kingdoms because they are not cells. They have no cytoplasm, no organelles and no metabolism of their own. Each is a protein coat around either DNA or RNA, and can reproduce only inside a host cell, which makes every virus a parasite. Examples include the tobacco mosaic virus, influenza and HIV.

Whether viruses are alive is a legitimate question — they fail most of MRS GREN outside a host.

The levels-of-organisation hierarchy below is strictly sub-topic (a) of Topic 2, Structures and Functions in Living Organisms, not Topic 1 content – it is included here for continuity with the classification material above. Organisms are organised as organelles, cells, tissues, organs, organ systems. A tissue is a group of cells with similar structure and function, e.g. glandular tissue in the stomach lining, which secretes digestive enzymes. An organ is a group of different tissues working together to perform a specific function, e.g. the stomach, made up of glandular, muscular and epithelial tissue. An organ system is a group of organs with related functions, e.g. the digestive system, made up of the stomach, small and large intestines, and associated glands. A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease, and can be from any of several groups: bacteria (cholera), fungi (athlete’s foot), protoctists (malaria, via Plasmodium) or viruses (influenza).

Worked example

Explain why a mushroom is not classified as a plant.

No chlorophyll        -> cannot photosynthesise
Nutrition             -> saprotrophic, not autotrophic
Cell wall             -> made of chitin, not cellulose
Body structure        -> hyphae forming a mycelium, not tissues and organs
Storage carbohydrate  -> glycogen, not starch

Any three of those, clearly contrasted with plants, will score.

Common mistakes

Confusing excretion with egestion. Saying fungi “eat” their food — they digest externally then absorb. Classifying viruses in a kingdom, or describing them as cells. Stating all fungi are multicellular, forgetting yeast. Writing that prokaryotes have “no DNA” rather than no nucleus. Calling Plasmodium a bacterium when it is a protoctist.
