The eight characteristics of living organisms
Nutrition, respiration, excretion, growth, movement, sensitivity, reproduction, and control of internal conditions (homeostasis). The standard mnemonic is MRS GREN — Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition, Control of internal conditions.
The two definitions that decide marks:
- Excretion — removal of the waste products of metabolism, substances the body itself produced. Egestion is undigested food leaving the gut; it was never absorbed, so it is not excretion, since it was never part of the organism’s own metabolism in the first place.
- Growth — a permanent increase in size and dry mass. Taking up water increases mass without being growth.
The five kingdoms

Saprotrophic nutrition is the fungal method and must be described in the right order: enzymes are secreted onto the food, digestion happens outside the organism, and the soluble products are then absorbed. Extracellular digestion first, absorption second. Fungi and bacteria acting this way as decomposers are ecologically important: they break down dead organisms and waste, releasing mineral ions back into the soil for plants to reabsorb, so nutrients are recycled through the ecosystem rather than being lost.
Storage compounds
Plants store starch and sucrose. Animals and fungi store glycogen. This distinction is examined more often than students expect, and is easy to mix up since fungi are often assumed — incorrectly — to store starch alongside plants simply because both are non-animal kingdoms.
Pathogens
Not a kingdom, but a category — organisms that cause disease.

Viruses are not classed as living, because they can only reproduce inside a host cell and show none of the characteristics of life independently. They have no cytoplasm and no organelles — only genetic material inside a protein coat. This is a favourite question and the reason must be given, not just the statement.
Pathogen vs vector. Don’t confuse the two: the pathogen is the disease-causing organism itself (e.g. Plasmodium, which causes malaria), while a vector is the organism that carries and transmits it (the mosquito). The mosquito is not the pathogen — it is the transport mechanism.
Levels of organisation (Topic 2 sub-topic (a))

organelle -> cell -> tissue -> organ -> organ system -> organism
- Tissue — a group of cells with similar structure and function.
- Organ — a group of different tissues performing a specific function.
- Organ system — a group of organs with related functions.
Concrete example (digestive system): glandular tissue in the stomach lining (secretes digestive enzymes) is a tissue; the stomach itself, made of glandular, muscular and epithelial tissue working together, is an organ; the stomach plus small intestine, large intestine and associated glands together form the digestive system, an organ system.
Exam traps
- Confusing excretion with egestion.
- Defining growth without “permanent” or “dry mass”.
- Saying fungi photosynthesise — they have no chloroplasts.
- Giving cellulose as the fungal cell wall material; it is chitin.
- Describing saprotrophic nutrition as absorption then digestion — it is the reverse.
- Saying viruses are living, or saying they are not living without giving a reason.
- Attributing glycogen storage to plants.
