This guide covers 4.2, Network issues and communication, the second half of Topic 4 in Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology 0417. It follows 4.1, Networks and moves from network infrastructure to the security risks and communication tools that come with using a network.

Security issues regarding data transfer

You need to understand the privacy and confidentiality issues involved in transferring data across a network – data moving between devices or across the internet can potentially be intercepted or accessed by someone other than the intended recipient, which is why the specific protective measures below matter.

Passwords

You need to know how to avoid password interception by using up-to- date anti-spyware and by regularly changing passwords, and to be able to explain the differences between strong and weak passwords. A strong password typically combines length with a mix of character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers, symbols) and avoids easily guessed personal information, while a weak password is short, uses only one character type, or is based on easily discoverable information such as a name or birthdate. Regularly changing passwords limits how long a compromised password remains useful to an attacker, even if it has already been intercepted or guessed.

Other authentication methods

You need to know a named range of authentication methods beyond passwords: zero login, biometric methods, magnetic stripes, smart cards, physical tokens, and electronic tokens. Zero login verifies identity using passive signals (such as typing pattern, location or device recognition) without requiring an active password entry at all. Biometric methods use a measurable physical characteristic – fingerprint, iris pattern, facial recognition – that is difficult for another person to replicate. Magnetic stripes and smart cards store authentication data on a physical card, read by a card reader. Physical tokens are separate hardware devices (such as a keyfob generating a one-time code) a user must have in their possession, while electronic tokens provide an equivalent code digitally, typically through an app on a phone. A recurring theme across these methods is combining “something you know” (a password), “something you have” (a token or card), and “something you are” (a biometric) for stronger, multi-factor authentication than any single method alone.

Anti-malware software

You need to know the use of anti-malware and anti-virus software, including the operation of removing or quarantining viruses using up-to-date software, scanning storage media used to transfer data, and scanning data or software when downloading. Keeping anti-malware software up to date matters specifically because it relies on a database of known malware signatures – software that is not updated cannot recognise malware discovered after its last update.

Electronic conferencing

You need to know the characteristics, uses, advantages and disadvantages of video-conferencing, audio-conferencing, and web-conferencing, along with the hardware, software and network connection each requires. Video-conferencing requires a camera, microphone, speaker/headphones, conferencing software, and a sufficiently fast internet connection to carry live video, and suits situations where seeing participants adds value (such as a job interview or negotiation). Audio-conferencing requires only a microphone and speaker/headphones with a lower-bandwidth connection, suiting situations where visual presence is unnecessary and cost or connection reliability matters more. Web-conferencing additionally allows sharing of documents, screens or presentations alongside audio and/or video, suiting collaborative work sessions where participants need to view the same material together in real time, not just hear or see each other.

A worked scenario

A company runs a weekly meeting with staff working from three different countries, needing to review a shared spreadsheet together in real time, and separately holds a quick daily catch-up call with a supplier where only a spoken update is needed. The weekly meeting is a clear case for web-conferencing: participants need to see and discuss the same live document, which audio- or video-conferencing alone cannot provide. The daily supplier catch-up, needing only a spoken update with no visual or document-sharing requirement, is better served by the simpler, lower-bandwidth audio-conferencing setup, since paying for and setting up video or web-conferencing hardware would be unnecessary cost and complexity for that specific need. This same reasoning – matching the communication method’s actual capability to what a scenario genuinely requires, rather than always choosing the most feature-rich option – is the pattern exam questions in this subtopic are built around.

Why this connects back to the network layer

The security and communication content in 4.2 depends directly on the network infrastructure covered in 4.1: passwords, authentication and anti-malware measures exist specifically because data travels across shared network paths – LANs, WLANs, WANs, and the internet – where interception is possible, and electronic conferencing depends on having a network connection (and, for video specifically, a fast enough one) already in place. Framing 4.2 as “what can go wrong on the network described in 4.1, and how communication tools use that same network” is a useful way to revise the two subtopics as one connected picture rather than two disconnected topic lists.

How to approach it

Learn the six named authentication methods in the “something you know / have / are” framework rather than as an unordered list, since it gives you a ready-made way to classify an unfamiliar authentication method a question might describe. For password questions, be ready to justify why a specific password is strong or weak using concrete criteria (length, character variety, avoidance of personal information) rather than a general impression. For the three conferencing types, connect each one’s required hardware directly to what it is capable of delivering – if a scenario only needs audio, the correct answer is audio-conferencing’s simpler hardware requirement, not video-conferencing’s fuller (and more expensive, more bandwidth-demanding) setup. Keep anti-malware’s dependence on regular updates as a specific, statable fact – “the software must be updated regularly to recognise new malware” is a more complete answer than simply “use anti-virus software”.
