This guide covers Paper 1 Cognition and Behaviour, one of two equally-weighted papers in OxfordAQA International GCSE Psychology (9218), first teaching September 2023, first examined May/June 2025. There is no coursework – both papers are examined by written assessment.

How to approach it

Because Research Methods (1.4) is applied alongside the content sub-topics rather than assessed as a standalone unit, practise applying research methods questions directly to memory, perception and biopsychology scenarios rather than revising methods in isolation – this pairing is exactly what the paper is built to test. Memory (1.1) and perception (1.2) both reward being able to describe a model or process accurately and then evaluate it, so structure revision around description plus evaluation rather than description alone. Biopsychology (1.3) introduces biological vocabulary that pairs with the more behavioural content of Paper 2, so build a clear picture of how brain structure and function relate to the behaviours studied elsewhere in the specification. As with any GCSE-level psychology course, structure notes around named studies and models rather than loose general knowledge, since exam questions consistently ask students to describe and evaluate specific evidence rather than give an unsupported opinion. Reviewing all four sub-topics together toward the end of preparation, rather than treating each as a closed unit, helps surface the connections between them that source-based exam questions often draw on.

Memory

Memory involves encoding, storage and retrieval. The multi-store model proposes three stores:

Attention moves information from sensory to short-term; rehearsal moves it to long-term. The serial position curve — better recall of the first and last items — supports the existence of separate stores.

Long-term memory divides into episodic (personal events), semantic (facts) and procedural (skills).

Forgetting is explained by interference — proactive (old disrupts new) and retroactive (new disrupts old) — and by retrieval failure, where the cues present at encoding are absent at recall.

Perception

Sensation is the raw information the senses receive; perception is the brain’s interpretation of it.

Gibson’s direct theory is bottom-up: the optic array supplies sufficient information — motion parallax, texture gradient, optic flow — for accurate perception without inference.

Gregory’s constructivist theory is top-down: perception is a hypothesis built from prior knowledge and expectation. Illusions such as the Müller-Lyer and Ponzo figures support this, because the brain misapplies depth cues learned from a carpentered environment.

Illusions are useful evidence precisely because they reveal different ways perception can go wrong. The Müller-Lyer and Ponzo illusions arise from misapplied depth cues. Rubin’s vase arises from ambiguity — the same outline can be read as a vase or as two faces. The Kanizsa triangle arises from fiction, where the brain supplies edges that are not actually present in the image. The Necker cube also arises from ambiguity, flipping unpredictably between two equally valid three-dimensional interpretations — together these examples show perception is an active hypothesis the brain forms and revises, not a passive reading of the image.

Depth cues are monocular (linear perspective, relative size, height in plane, occlusion) and binocular (retinal disparity, convergence).

Perceptual set — the tendency to perceive what we expect — is affected by culture, motivation, emotion and context.

Development and research methods

Piaget explained development through schemas modified by assimilation and accommodation, across four stages: sensorimotor (0–2, object permanence develops), pre-operational (2–7, egocentric thinking, cannot conserve), concrete operational (7–11, conservation achieved) and formal operational (11+, abstract and hypothetical reasoning). His theory has been enormously influential on classroom practice, though he is generally thought to have underestimated what children can do, since child-friendly versions of his tasks produce earlier success than his original methods suggested.

Dweck’s mindsets describe a related but distinct idea about motivation: a fixed mindset treats ability as innate, so challenge is avoided and failure feels like a final verdict on ability, whereas a growth mindset treats ability as something that can be developed through effort, so challenge becomes worthwhile. This is why praising effort rather than innate intelligence is recommended — it encourages a growth mindset rather than a fixed one.

Research methods: experiments (laboratory, field, natural), observation, self-report and correlation. Key terms are the independent and dependent variables, extraneous variables, and the distinction between reliability (consistency) and validity (measuring what is intended).

Ethics require informed consent, no deception, right to withdraw, protection from harm, confidentiality and debriefing.

Worked example

Explain why the Müller-Lyer illusion supports Gregory rather than Gibson.

The two lines are physically identical, yet one appears longer.

Gregory: the brain interprets the arrowheads as depth cues -- the
  fins-out figure resembles an inside corner, so it is judged
  further away and therefore larger. Perception is an inference,
  and here the inference is WRONG.

Gibson would predict accurate perception, since the optic array
  contains the true information.

The persistent error is therefore evidence for top-down processing.

Common mistakes

Confusing sensation with perception. Swapping proactive and retroactive interference. Describing Gibson’s theory as top-down. Listing depth cues without classifying them as monocular or binocular. Confusing reliability with validity. Concluding cause from a correlation.
