Location — map facts

Tropic of Cancer; latitudes 30°N, 36°N; longitudes 64°E, 70°E, 76°E; Arabian Sea to the south; Pakistan’s position in South and Central Asia. This section is tested visually as often as in writing — practise locating everything on a blank outline map, not just recalling facts in words.

Cities and administrative areas — the 15 to place

Islamabad, Murree, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot, Peshawar, Chitral, Gilgit, Hyderabad, Karachi, Quetta, Gwadar.

Topography — no formation, only identification and influence

Not required: how any landform was geologically formed. Required: identifying it and explaining its influence on human activity.

Influence to always explain: steep, high-altitude terrain makes road/rail construction difficult and expensive → concentrates transport routes along valleys and passes rather than a dense, even network. This exact chain — named feature → physical constraint → human consequence — is the shape a strong topography answer takes.

Climate — describe AND explain, always paired

Four zones: arid, semi-arid, humid, highland. The monsoon (seasonal reversal of wind direction and pressure systems) brings most of the country’s annual rainfall and is the single most consequential climatic feature for agriculture and water supply.

Always pair a physical pattern with its human effect: highland regions face low temperatures, ice and snow shaping mountain-community life; lowland regions face both drought/water shortage AND flooding from heavy rain storms, depending on season and region.

Worked chain — the answer shape examiners want

Named mountain range (e.g. Karakoram/Himalaya) → steep, high-altitude terrain → difficult, expensive road/rail construction → transport concentrated along valleys/passes rather than spread evenly. Practise this exact four-step shape for any topography-to-consequence question.

Why this section is foundational to the rest of Paper 2

Paper 1 covers The History and Culture of Pakistan; Paper 2 is The Environment of Pakistan, and Section 1 lays the physical foundation for everything that follows in that paper. Location, administrative geography, topography and climate all recur as context in later Paper 2 sections on natural resources, agriculture, industry and population — a candidate who has not secured the Indus tributaries, the western plateaux, or the four climate zones here will lose time re-deriving that context mid-answer when a later section assumes it. Memorising this section thoroughly is one of the most efficient uses of Paper 2 revision time precisely because it underpins so much of what comes after it.

Distinguishing administrative geography from physical geography

A frequent source of lost precision is blending 1(b)’s administrative map (provinces, territories, cities) with 1(c)’s physical landforms (mountain ranges, plateaux, deserts) as though they were one and the same. They are assessed as two distinct layers: a city like Quetta belongs to 1(b) as an administrative location, while the Balochistan Plateau it sits within belongs to 1(c) as a physical feature. An answer that treats a city as though it were itself a landform, or vice versa, loses marks for imprecision even when the underlying facts are broadly correct.

Connecting climate zones to the regions that produce them

Rather than learning arid, semi-arid, humid and highland climate as four abstract categories, attach each to a region already introduced in this section: highland climate to the northern mountain ranges, arid and semi-arid conditions to the western plateaux and southern deserts, and humid conditions to the areas most affected by monsoon rainfall. This regional attachment turns “which climate zone does this location belong to” questions into a lookup against the map you have already built, rather than a separate piece of recall to hold in memory independently.

Exam traps

  • Naming landforms, rivers or deserts without being able to locate them on a map.
  • Describing how a landform was geologically formed — not required.
  • Treating climate and topography as unconnected rather than explaining how one influences the other.
  • Giving a vague “harsh climate” answer instead of naming the specific zone, season, and human effect.

A revision checklist to work through in order

Confirm you can, in sequence: locate the Tropic of Cancer, the specified latitudes and longitudes, and Pakistan’s regional position on a blank map; name and locate every administrative area and city listed above; name and locate the major mountain ranges, plateaux, rivers and deserts; explain how topography has influenced land use and transport networks; describe the causes of the monsoon and Pakistan’s main climate zones; and explain the effects of climate on Pakistan’s economy and people. Working through this checklist in order, rather than jumping between sub-sections, mirrors how the section itself builds — each later item assumes the earlier ones are already secure.
