Cambridge O Level Business Studies (7115) is a linear, not-tiered qualification of two equally weighted written papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes, 80 marks, 50% of the total, both externally assessed. Paper 1 (Short Answer and Data Response) uses four questions mixing short answers with structured data-response tasks. Paper 2 (Case Study) uses four questions all based on a single case-study insert provided in the exam. These notes complement the site’s guides to People in Business and Business Activity and Classification.
The two papers reward different answering habits
Paper 1’s short-answer questions reward concise, precise responses matched closely to the marks available; Paper 2’s case-study questions reward sustained application of business concepts to one continuous business scenario across all four questions. Exam-preparation priority: practise the two formats separately – brevity and precision for Paper 1, sustained case application for Paper 2 – rather than using one general essay-writing approach for both.
Paper 1’s data-response questions need close reading of the given data
Structured data-response questions provide figures, tables or short extracts that answers must reference directly. Exam-preparation priority: practise identifying and quoting the specific data given in a question before analysing it, since generic business knowledge without reference to the provided data scores lower.
Paper 2’s four questions all draw on the same case, so early misreading compounds
Because every question on Paper 2 relates to a single case-study insert, a misunderstanding of the business’s situation in Question 1 can distort answers to Questions 2-4 as well. Exam-preparation priority: read the entire case-study insert carefully before answering any question, rather than diving into Question 1 immediately.
Both papers reward using specific business terminology precisely
Vague everyday language costs marks compared with the same point made using the exact business term the mark scheme expects. Exam-preparation priority: build and drill a glossary of exact terms per topic – cash flow, market segmentation, delegation – so precise vocabulary becomes automatic rather than approximated under time pressure.
Both papers share the same underlying content, examined two different ways
Paper 1 and Paper 2 are not separate content areas – the syllabus states that each paper “assesses content drawn from the entire syllabus”, so all six topic areas (understanding business activity, people in business, marketing, operations management, financial information and decisions, and external influences on business activity) are examined twice, once through short-answer/data-response questions and once through sustained case application. Exam-preparation priority: content revision does not need duplicating between the two papers, but technique practice does – the same topic knowledge must be rehearsed in both the concise short-answer style and the sustained case-application style before either paper.
Worked routine: applying a concept to the case-study insert
The routine below is an original model written for this resource, not a reproduction of any official past paper or mark scheme.
Step 1 - read the whole case-study insert once, without
answering:
Get the full business situation before engaging with any question.
Step 2 - note the business's key facts: size, sector, stated
problem:
These recur across multiple questions -- write them down once.
Step 3 - identify the specific concept each question is testing:
Match to the syllabus topic area before drafting an answer.
Step 4 - apply the concept using the case's own figures and
context:
Not generic business theory -- theory tied explicitly to this
business's stated situation.
Step 5 - conclude with a judgement relevant to this specific
business:
What matters most for this business, given its stated size,
sector and problem -- not business in general.
Step 4 is where most Paper 2 marks are actually won: examiners consistently reward answers that use the case’s own figures and context over answers that could apply to any business in the same industry.
Before/during exam checklist
- Before the exams: practise Paper 1’s short-answer/data-response format and Paper 2’s case-study format separately, since they reward different skills; drill exact business terminology per topic.
- During Paper 1: quote the specific data given before analysing it.
- During Paper 2: read the entire case-study insert before answering any question, and apply every answer to the case’s own figures and stated situation.
Self-test
- How do Paper 1 and Paper 2 differ in structure and required technique?
- Why is reading the whole Paper 2 case-study insert before answering important?
- Why does using precise business terminology matter across both papers?
- What makes a Paper 2 answer score more highly than generic business theory?
Answers: 1. Paper 1 uses four short-answer/data-response questions rewarding concise, precise answers; Paper 2 uses four case-study questions rewarding sustained application of concepts to one continuous business scenario. 2. Because all four Paper 2 questions relate to the same case, so misunderstanding the business’s situation early can distort answers to later questions as well. 3. Because vague everyday language scores lower than the exact business term the mark scheme expects for the same point. 4. Applying the concept using the case’s own specific figures and stated situation, rather than writing generic theory that could describe any business in the same industry.
