Where this fits in the syllabus

Because the geographic-themes options vary by school, revision material on an unstudied option is wasted effort. The core is different: every DP Geography student, regardless of school, studies Global Climate as part of the shared 70-hour core, examined in Paper 2 for everyone without exception. This makes it one of the highest-value topics to revise thoroughly, since unlike an option, it applies universally.

How to approach it

Keep adaptation and mitigation clearly separate — a common error is using the two terms interchangeably, when the specification treats them as distinct types of response with different targets (mitigation targets the cause, adaptation targets the effect). When analysing why two places facing a similar climate hazard experience different outcomes, always name all three components of vulnerability explicitly (exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity) rather than simply asserting that one place is “more vulnerable” — a strong Paper 2 answer treats vulnerability as the combination of these three factors, not the size of the hazard alone. As with every DP Geography theme, generic description scores lower than named, specific case studies with real dates, locations and figures, so build a small bank of specific vulnerability and resilience examples — a named flood event, drought, or heatwave with its human and policy response — that can be reused flexibly across different Paper 2 questions.

Worked example: comparing vulnerability across two places

A question asks why two places facing a similar climate hazard (for example, flooding) might experience very different outcomes.

Exposure:           both places face a similar physical hazard
                     (rising flood risk)

Sensitivity:         Place A has more people living in low-lying,
                     poorly built housing; Place B has stronger
                     building codes and better drainage infrastructure

Adaptive capacity:   Place A has fewer economic resources and weaker
                     institutions to respond; Place B has greater
                     financial and institutional capacity to invest in
                     defences and recovery

Conclusion:          vulnerability is not just about the size of the
                     hazard but the combination of exposure,
                     sensitivity and adaptive capacity -- two places
                     facing an identical hazard can have very
                     different outcomes

Naming all three components explicitly, rather than only describing one place as “more vulnerable” than the other, is what distinguishes a strong Paper 2 answer from a purely descriptive one.

Connecting to the fieldwork report

Because the internally assessed fieldwork report can be based on any suitable syllabus topic, Global Climate is a viable choice where local conditions allow a genuinely testable question – for example, investigating a community’s perceived vulnerability or adaptive responses to a local climate hazard. Where fieldwork engages with this core theme, use its specific vocabulary (exposure, sensitivity, adaptive capacity) to frame both the investigation’s question and its analysis, since this demonstrates direct application of taught core content rather than a generic geographic inquiry that happens to mention climate.

Common mistakes

Confusing adaptation (managing a hazard’s effects) with mitigation (reducing the hazard’s underlying causes). Describing vulnerability in general terms without naming its three components. Using vague, unnamed examples such as “a developing country” instead of a specific, named place and event with real figures. Assuming this theme is optional, or blending it into a geographic-themes option answer without being explicit about which paper’s content is being used — Paper 1 (options) and Paper 2 (core) are marked against different prescribed content even where the underlying geography is related.

Why resilience is more than the absence of vulnerability

A frequent conceptual slip is treating resilience simply as “low vulnerability” – the specification treats them as related but distinct ideas. A place can reduce its exposure or sensitivity to a hazard (lowering vulnerability) while separately building the institutional and economic capacity to recover quickly if a disaster does occur (building resilience); strong Paper 2 answers can discuss a place’s response along both dimensions rather than assuming that addressing one automatically addresses the other. This distinction matters most in comparative questions, where a place might be less vulnerable in the moment a hazard strikes but recover more slowly afterwards than a place with different characteristics – a nuance that only becomes visible once resilience is treated as its own concept rather than a mirror image of vulnerability.
