Population and Settlement is the first of three themes, alongside The Natural Environment and Economic Development. It is the theme most directly about people rather than physical processes, and it introduces case-study-based thinking — every sub-topic here is examined with reference to named, real-world examples — which is the same approach the syllabus expects across all three themes.

How to approach it
Every sub-topic in this theme is assessed with reference to specific case studies — a named city with a squatter settlement problem, a named international migration flow, a named country’s population pyramid — so revision should be organised case-study first, principle second: know two or three concrete, detailed examples per sub-topic rather than only the abstract definitions, since exam questions consistently ask candidates to “describe” or “explain, using examples” rather than define in the abstract. Population pyramids are worth particular attention because they are examined both as a stand-alone skill (reading age-sex structure from a given pyramid) and as a link to other sub-topics — a youthful population pyramid connects directly to high birth rates in 1.1 and to pressure on services in 1.5, so practise tracing those connections across sub-topics rather than studying each in isolation.
The Demographic Transition Model
The Demographic Transition Model (DTM) sits underneath most of 1.1 and 1.3, and it is worth understanding as a story rather than memorising as five isolated boxes. Stage 1 (high fluctuating) describes remote, pre-industrial populations with high birth and death rates roughly in balance, so natural increase stays low. Stage 2 (early expanding) is where the population explosion happens: the death rate falls sharply first, thanks to improved medicine, sanitation, clean water and a more reliable food supply, while the birth rate stays high because attitudes towards family size, religion and the economic value of children change far more slowly than public health does — that lag between a fast-falling death rate and a stubbornly high birth rate is the entire mechanism behind rapid population growth. Stage 3 (late expanding) is when the birth rate finally starts to fall too, driven by wider contraception use, female education and employment, falling infant mortality (so families no longer need as many births to guarantee surviving children), urbanisation, and the rising cost of raising children in an urban, non-agricultural economy. Stages 4 and 5 (low fluctuating and decline) describe countries where both rates are low and population growth flattens or turns negative, as in Japan and Germany. When answering, name a real country at each stage rather than describing the stage in the abstract, and be ready to critique the model itself: it was built from European historical experience, it ignores migration entirely, it assumes every country follows the same path in the same order, and it gives no fixed timescale for how long each stage lasts.
Reading population pyramids and structure
Population pyramids translate 1.3’s structure content into a visual skill that is examined on its own and as a link to other sub-topics. A pyramid with a wide base that narrows rapidly signals a high birth rate and a high death rate — a youthful, stage 2 population with a high dependency burden on schools and future job markets. A pyramid with straight, near-vertical sides and a narrow base signals low birth and death rates — an ageing, stage 4 or 5 population. The dependency ratio, calculated as (population under 15 plus population over 64) divided by the working-age population (15–64), then multiplied by 100, quantifies how much of the pyramid’s shape translates into economic pressure. An ageing population raises pension and healthcare costs, shrinks the workforce and increases the tax burden on those still working, and countries respond with a higher retirement age, encouraging inward migration, or pro-natalist policies that incentivise larger families. A youthful population instead strains schools and health services now and risks high youth unemployment once that large cohort reaches working age, though it also promises a large future workforce if that potential is used well.
Migration in depth
1.2 expects both the causes and the consequences of migration to be argued from two sides at once. Push factors driving people to leave — unemployment, poverty, conflict, natural disaster, persecution, and poor access to services — should always be paired with the pull factors drawing them toward a specific destination, such as available jobs, higher wages, better services, greater safety, or family already settled there. Consequences are best organised by country: the receiving country typically gains a labour-shortage fix and often a younger, tax-paying workforce plus cultural diversity, but faces added pressure on housing and services and sometimes social tension; the source country benefits from remittances sent home, reduced local unemployment and skills brought back by returning migrants, but risks brain drain, the loss of working-age people, and family separation. Mark schemes consistently reward answers that evaluate both sides rather than treating migration as a one-directional story.
Settlement site, situation and hierarchy
1.5 and 1.6 distinguish site — the actual physical land a settlement occupies — from situation — its position relative to surrounding features and other settlements. Classic site factors include a reliable water supply, a dry point above a floodplain, defensibility, favourable relief and aspect, available building materials, fuel, and fertile land for early agriculture. Settlement hierarchy then describes how, as settlement size increases up from hamlet to village, town and city, the number of settlements at that size decreases while the range and number of services they offer increases. Two linked ideas make hierarchy answers precise: range is how far people will realistically travel to use a service, and threshold population is the minimum number of customers needed to make that service viable. A department store has both a high threshold and a large range, which is exactly why there are relatively few of them, each serving a wide catchment; a newsagent has a low threshold and a small range, so many can exist close together. Urban land-use within a city typically follows a recognisable pattern too — an accessible, high-value central business district, an inner city of older housing and former industry, lower-density suburbs, and a rural–urban fringe — and 1.6 and 1.7 both connect this pattern to the problems of rapid urban growth in developing countries, where rural–urban migration combined with high natural increase among young migrants produces informal settlements, congestion, pollution and strain on services, prompting responses such as site-and-service schemes, self-help housing schemes, and rural development aimed at reducing the push factors that drive migration to the city in the first place.
