Two groups of communication media
Static/print-style — newsletters, posters. No device or internet needed to view; cannot be updated once distributed; no interactivity.
Digital/interactive — websites, multimedia presentations, audio, video, media streaming, ePublications. Can combine text/image/sound/video; usually updatable after publication; often allow some interaction; require a suitable device (streaming also requires a working internet connection).
Streaming vs ePublication — the one fact that answers most questions
Media streaming: plays audio/video continuously as data arrives, without downloading the full file first — needs an ongoing connection, no local storage for the full file.
ePublication: downloaded as a complete file, then accessed offline — needs storage space, but no ongoing connection once downloaded.
Worked comparison: newsletter vs website vs multimedia presentation
A school communicating termly achievements to parents:
- Newsletter — reaches parents with no device/internet needed; fixed once distributed, cannot be corrected; ongoing print/distribution cost.
- Website — updatable any time, more content, can link to further detail; only reaches parents with a device and internet; audience must actively visit it.
- Multimedia presentation — rich, engaging, suits an in-person event (parents’ evening); far less accessible independently afterward than a website.
No option is unconditionally best — the right choice depends on audience tech access, whether content needs later updates, and whether delivery is passive (arrives to the audience) or active (audience must seek it out).
Mobile communication
SMS (short text over the mobile network), phone calls (mobile network’s voice channel), VoIP, video calls, internet access.
VoIP vs a standard call — the examinable distinction: VoIP carries voice as data over the internet, not over a dedicated voice channel — needs a working internet/wi-fi connection, can be much cheaper (especially internationally), but depends on connection quality in a way a standard mobile voice call does not. Video calls extend the same internet-based approach with a live video feed.
How 6.1 connects to earlier topics
Video calls and VoIP need the camera, microphone and network connection from Topics 2 and 4; media streaming depends on the same working internet connection that cloud computing (4.1) relies on. Treat 6.1 as an application of that earlier infrastructure, not a separate block of new facts — the same requirements (suitable device, sufficient bandwidth, working connection) recur across both topics.
Worked example: choosing between VoIP and a standard call
A small business wants to hold a weekly call with an overseas supplier. Using VoIP over the office’s existing internet connection avoids the much higher per-minute cost of an international call over the standard mobile/landline voice network, and the business already has the internet connection needed to support it. The trade-off it accepts is that call quality now depends on the internet connection’s reliability and bandwidth at the time of the call – if the connection is poor or congested, the VoIP call may suffer from delay, dropped audio or reduced quality in a way a standard voice call over a dedicated channel would not, since a standard call does not compete with other internet traffic for the same bandwidth.
Recognising media streaming and ePublications in a scenario
Cambridge often describes a scenario without naming “streaming” or “ePublication” directly, expecting you to recognise which is which from what happens to the data. A service that lets a user “start watching immediately while the rest of the video keeps loading in the background” is describing streaming – data is being played as it arrives. A service that requires a user to “download the full book before it can be opened, after which no internet connection is needed to read it” is describing an ePublication – the complete file is stored locally before use. Anchoring an answer to this data-handling distinction, rather than to surface features like “video” versus “text,” is what correctly identifies which term the scenario is testing.
Exam traps
- Declaring one medium simply “better” instead of naming the specific trade-off (a poster’s no-device-needed advantage is exactly why it can’t be updated).
- Confusing streaming with downloading — streaming does not store the whole file; an ePublication does.
- Naming VoIP without explaining why it differs from a standard call (data over the internet, not a dedicated voice channel) — exam questions test the distinction, not just the name.
- Assuming VoIP is always cheaper without conditions — it depends on connection quality and availability, unlike a standard mobile voice channel.
- Treating video calls as unrelated to VoIP, when they extend the same internet-based, data-carried approach with an added video feed.

Answers: 1. Advantage: no device or internet connection needed to view it; disadvantage: cannot be updated once distributed. 2. Streaming plays the content as data arrives without storing the full file; an ePublication is downloaded as a complete file before/as it is used. 3. A website can be updated at any time and hold more content, with links to further detail; the school loses reach to parents without a suitable device or internet access, and updates require parents to actively visit rather than receiving it directly. 4. VoIP carries voice as data over the internet, not over a dedicated voice channel. 5. Topics 2 (hardware: camera, microphone) and 4 (networks/connection). 6. A multimedia presentation is generally delivered live at an event and is far less practical for parents to revisit independently afterward compared with an always-available website.
