This guide covers 6.1, Communication, the first subtopic of Topic 6, ICT applications, in Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology 0417. It follows Topic 5, The effects of using IT, and moves from IT’s general social effects into the specific communication media and devices used to reach an audience.
Communication media
You need to know the characteristics and uses of a named set of communication media: newsletters, posters, websites, multimedia presentations, audio, video, media streaming, and ePublications. These fall into two useful groups when revising. Static/print-style media – newsletters and posters – suit delivering a fixed message to a defined audience without needing a device to view it (a poster on a notice board, a newsletter distributed by email or print), but cannot be updated once distributed and offer no interactivity. Digital/ interactive media – websites, multimedia presentations, audio, video, media streaming and ePublications – can combine text, images, sound and moving image, can typically be updated after publication (unlike a printed poster), and often allow the audience some degree of interaction (navigating a website, pausing a video), but require a suitable device and, for streaming specifically, a working internet connection to access at all.
A key distinction worth learning precisely: media streaming delivers audio or video content continuously over the internet without requiring the full file to be downloaded first, whereas an ePublication (an electronic book, magazine or document) is typically downloaded as a complete file and can then be accessed offline. This affects a genuinely examinable trade-off: streaming needs an ongoing internet connection but no local storage space for the full file, while an ePublication needs storage space but, once downloaded, no ongoing connection.
A worked comparison: newsletter vs website vs multimedia presentation
A school wants to communicate its termly achievements to parents. Choosing between the three media illustrates the trade-offs above. A newsletter reaches parents without internet access or a particular device, but is fixed at the moment of distribution and cannot be corrected or updated afterward, and printing and distributing it has an ongoing material cost. A website can be updated at any time, can include far more content than fits on a printed page, and can link out to further detail, but only reaches parents who have a suitable device and internet access, and requires someone to actively visit it rather than having it arrive directly. A multimedia presentation (combining text, images, audio and video) suits a scenario where the school wants to deliver a richer, more engaging summary at an in-person event such as a parents’ evening, but is far less practical for parents to access independently afterward compared with a website. None of the three is unconditionally best – the right choice depends on the audience’s access to technology, whether the content needs to be updated later, and whether delivery is passive (arrives to the audience) or active (the audience must seek it out).
Mobile communication
You need to know the use of mobile devices for communication, covering SMS messaging, phone calls, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), video calls, and accessing the internet. SMS messaging sends short text messages over a mobile network. Traditional phone calls use the mobile network’s voice channel directly. VoIP is distinct from a traditional phone call in a specific, examinable way: it carries voice communication as data over the internet rather than over a dedicated voice channel, which is why VoIP calls typically require a working internet or wi-fi connection and can be significantly cheaper than a standard call, especially internationally, but depend on connection quality in a way a traditional voice call over a mobile network does not. Video calls extend this same internet-based approach to include a live video feed alongside audio.
How to approach it
When comparing communication media, always weigh a specific trade-off rather than declaring one medium simply “better” – a poster’s key advantage (no device or internet connection needed to view it) is also exactly why it cannot be updated once printed, while a website’s updatability is only available to someone with a suitable device and connection. For the streaming-versus-ePublication distinction, anchor your answer to what happens to the data: streaming plays data as it arrives without storing the whole file, while an ePublication is downloaded and stored in full before, or as, it is used – this single fact answers most “characteristics and uses” questions on the pair. For mobile communication, be ready to explain specifically why VoIP differs from a standard phone call (data over the internet rather than a dedicated voice channel), since this distinction, not just naming VoIP as an option, is what exam questions in this subtopic typically test.
How this connects to earlier topics
This subtopic draws directly on hardware and network content from earlier in the syllabus: video calls and VoIP both require the camera, microphone and network connection covered in Topics 2 and 4, and media streaming depends on the same working internet connection that cloud computing (4.1) relies on. Recognising 6.1 as an application of that earlier infrastructure – rather than an entirely separate block of new facts – makes it easier to reason about unfamiliar scenarios, since the same underlying requirements (a suitable device, sufficient bandwidth, a working connection) recur across both topics.
