5.1 Smart devices in the home — five named dimensions

Lifestyle, leisure time, physical fitness, security of data, social interaction. Always name the specific dimension a question asks about, and explain the mechanism, not just “good” or “bad”.

Example — smart thermostat: automates heating (lifestyle: saves time); network-connected and account-linked (data security: potential target if account/network not secured); largely neutral for fitness directly, though automating small tasks is sometimes raised as a factor in reduced everyday activity.

5.1 Smart devices in transport

Three named areas: security of data, autonomous vehicles, transport safety.

Autonomous vehicles — positives: reduced human error; passenger can use travel time productively. Autonomous vehicles — negatives: job displacement for professional drivers; new safety questions around decision-making in unusual situations; data-security risk if control systems are accessed without authorisation.

5.2 Health problems from prolonged IT use

Link a named issue to its specific cause and a specific prevention — a single generic “take breaks” answer applied to all four loses marks; each has its own cause/countermeasure pairing.

Worked example: a fitness tracker

A wearable fitness tracker illustrates the home dimensions cleanly, and is worth having as a ready-made worked example. Lifestyle: encourages awareness of daily activity levels, which can positively shape habits over time. Leisure time: largely neutral, though some users report spending leisure time reviewing tracked data. Physical fitness: a rare case where the device’s whole purpose directly targets this dimension positively, by prompting more movement through step or activity goals. Security of data: the tracker collects and transmits personal health data, typically to a paired app and cloud account, raising a genuine concern if that account is not properly secured, since health data is particularly sensitive. Social interaction: some trackers include social or competitive features (e.g. comparing step counts with friends), which can increase interaction, though the device itself does not guarantee this without those features being used. Comparing this worked example with the thermostat example above is a useful revision exercise, since it shows how the same five dimensions apply very differently depending on the device’s actual purpose.

Autonomous vehicles: unpacking “transport safety” specifically

Transport safety is listed separately from data security and is often confused with it. Data security concerns whether a vehicle’s control systems could be accessed without authorisation; transport safety concerns how safely the vehicle actually operates and makes decisions, particularly in unusual or unpredictable situations a human driver might handle differently (for example, an unexpected obstacle, unclear road markings, or an ambiguous right-of-way situation). A strong answer on autonomous vehicles keeps these as two distinct, separately named concerns rather than folding both into a single vague “safety” point.

Why Topic 5 sits where it does

Topics 1–4 ask “how does this technology work” (factual recall); Topic 5 asks “what happens to people and society when it’s used” (reasoned discussion of trade-offs). Recognise this shift so you answer 5.1/5.2 with balanced discussion, not a recalled fact.

Exam traps

  • Giving an undirected opinion about smart technology instead of engaging with the specific named dimension the question asks about.
  • Blending all four health issues into one generic “IT health tips” answer instead of pairing each with its own cause and prevention.
  • One-sided “discuss”/“evaluate” answers — these command words expect both sides plus a brief reasoned judgement.
  • Treating autonomous-vehicle job displacement and safety/decision-making as the same point — they are two distinct negative effects.
  • Forgetting cause AND prevention both need stating — naming only the health issue itself earns no marks.

Topics 1–4 ask how the technology works (factual recall); Topic 5 asks what effect the technology has on people and society (reasoned discussion of trade-offs). 6. Security of data — the camera system is network-connected and linked to an account/app, making it a potential target for unauthorised access if the account or home network is not properly secured.
