This guide covers Topic 5 Mensuration, for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, 2025–2027 series. All five subtopics (C5.1–C5.5) have both Core and Extended versions; the differences between the two tiers are smaller and more specific here than in most other topics, so this guide flags exactly where Core and Extended content diverges rather than presenting two largely separate lists.

Where this fits in 0580

Mensuration is the fifth of nine topics in 0580 and depends directly on Geometry for its shape vocabulary — you cannot calculate the area of a trapezium or the volume of a prism without already knowing what those terms mean from Topic 4. It also depends on Topic 2’s algebraic substitution skills, since most mensuration questions require substituting given measurements into a formula and then rearranging or simplifying the result.

  • C5.1 Units of measure — using metric units of mass, length, area, volume and capacity in practical situations, and converting quantities into larger or smaller units, including between different units of area (for example, cm² ↔ m²) and between units of volume and capacity (for example, m³ ↔ litres)
  • C5.2 Area and perimeter — carrying out calculations involving the perimeter and area of a rectangle, triangle, parallelogram and trapezium; except for the area of a triangle, formulas are not given and must be known
  • C5.3 Circles, arcs and sectors — carrying out calculations involving the circumference and area of a circle, and involving arc length and sector area as fractions of the circumference and area of a circle, where the sector angle is a factor of 360°; answers may be asked for in terms of π; formulas are given in the List of formulas

Extended differences from Core

  • E5.3 removes the restriction that the sector angle must be a factor of 360°, and explicitly includes minor and major sectors — Extended candidates must be able to work with any sector angle, not only ones that divide evenly into a full turn
  • E5.5 extends to more complex compound solids, with the syllabus’s own example moving from “half a sphere” at Core to a frustum at Extended — Extended candidates should be ready to calculate the surface area and volume of a frustum (a cone or pyramid with its top cut off), not just simpler compound shapes

How to approach it

Because formulas for circles, arcs, sectors, and 3D surface area and volume are given in the List of formulas, the exam skill being tested is not memorising them but selecting the right one and substituting correctly — practise identifying which given formula a question requires before attempting to recall it from memory. By contrast, the area formulas for a rectangle, triangle (only its own formula is given), parallelogram and trapezium in C5.2/E5.2 are not provided, so these four must be memorised precisely. Keep units disciplined throughout a multi-step problem: converting between cm and m, or between cm³ and litres, part-way through a calculation and forgetting to convert back (or converting only one of several measurements) is one of the most common ways marks are lost in this topic, especially in compound-shape questions that mix units from different parts of the question. For compound shapes and solids, always identify the simple shapes a compound figure is built from before calculating — sketching a quick decomposition (a compound shape as a rectangle plus a triangle, for example, or a compound solid as a cylinder plus a cone) makes the arithmetic that follows far less error-prone than trying to compute the whole figure at once.

Worked example: sector area with a non-factor angle (Extended)

Find the area of a sector with radius 8 cm and sector angle 110°.

Sector area = (angle / 360) x pi x r^2
            = (110 / 360) x pi x 8^2
            = (110 / 360) x pi x 64
            ~= 61.5 cm^2 (3 s.f.)

At Core tier, this exact question would not appear, since 110° is not a factor of 360° — Core sector questions are restricted to angles such as 90°, 60°, 45° or 120° that divide evenly into a full turn. Recognising which tier a given sector angle belongs to is a quick, reliable way to check whether a practice question matches your own exam entry.

Common mistakes

Using a formula from memory when the correct version is already given in the List of formulas, introducing an avoidable error. Forgetting the final unit conversion in a multi-step problem that mixes units (for example, calculating in cm but being asked for an answer in m³). Applying a sector-area or arc-length calculation as if the angle were a factor of 360° when working at Extended tier, where this restriction does not apply. Treating a compound shape as a single unfamiliar figure instead of decomposing it into simple shapes first. Leaving an answer that should be “in terms of π” as a rounded decimal instead of retaining π in the final expression.

Quick revision checklist

  • Memorise the area formulas for a rectangle, triangle, parallelogram and trapezium, since these are not given.
  • Practise locating and correctly substituting into the given formulas for circles, arcs, sectors, and 3D surface area and volume.
  • Convert units confidently between mm/cm/m/km (and their squared and cubed forms) and between volume and capacity units.
  • Practise decomposing compound shapes and solids into simple components before calculating.
  • At Extended tier, practise sector and arc questions with angles that are not factors of 360°, and compound solids involving a frustum.
