This guide covers 3.2.1 The Landscape and Natural Resources of Pakistan, the compulsory topic that opens Paper 2 (The Human and Physical Geography of Pakistan) in OxfordAQA International GCSE Pakistan Studies (9236), Version 1.9. Unlike Sections 2.3 and 2.4 of this paper, which are optional, 3.2.1 is examined for every candidate in Paper 2, Section A.

  • 3.2.1.1 Physical landscape — distribution and characteristics of major biomes in Pakistan, including deserts, forests and mangroves; distribution and characteristics of the landscape, including mountains, plateaus, rivers, flood plains, deserts, and coastal areas; formation, processes and landforms of rivers and glaciers; human and physical causes and impacts of physical hazards including earthquakes, tsunamis and floods

How to approach it

This section rewards candidates who can connect physical processes to human consequences rather than describing landscape features in isolation. For 3.2.1.1, don’t just list landform types — be ready to explain how a named hazard (an earthquake, flood, or glacial process) has both physical causes (tectonic setting, monsoon rainfall, glacial melt) and human impacts (settlement damage, displacement, economic loss), since this cause-and-impact structure is exactly what the specification’s wording (“human and physical causes and impacts”) signals will be tested.

For 3.2.1.2, keep the monsoon and western disturbances distinct: the monsoon brings the bulk of summer rainfall from the southwest, while western disturbances are winter weather systems bringing rain and snow from the Mediterranean region — conflating the two is a common source of lost marks when explaining regional rainfall differences.

For 3.2.1.3 and 3.2.1.4, practise linking a specific named resource (for example natural gas, hydel power, or a named mineral) to both its distribution within Pakistan and its importance for economic development, since purely descriptive answers about where a resource is found score lower than answers that also explain why its location and use matter.

Worked example: renewable vs non-renewable energy

A question asks candidates to compare the advantages and disadvantages of renewable and non-renewable energy resources for Pakistan.

Non-renewable (e.g. natural gas):
  Advantage:     established infrastructure and reliable, high-output
                 supply for industry and households
  Disadvantage:  finite reserves, import dependency once domestic
                 reserves decline, and environmental/climate impact

Renewable (e.g. hydel power):
  Advantage:     abundant potential given Pakistan's river systems and
                 glacial meltwater, with lower long-term running costs
  Disadvantage:  high upfront construction cost, dependency on seasonal
                 river flow, and potential environmental disruption from
                 dam construction

Structuring the answer resource-by-resource with a clear advantage and disadvantage for each, rather than making general claims about “renewables are better,” matches how this content is assessed.

Common mistakes

Describing landforms or biomes without linking them to the hazards or resources associated with them. Treating the monsoon and western disturbances as the same weather system. Discussing natural resources only in terms of where they are found, without explaining their importance for economic development, which the specification explicitly requires. Giving one-sided answers on renewable versus non-renewable energy that ignore genuine disadvantages of the “preferred” option.

Key terms to define precisely

Be ready to define these accurately in your own words rather than relying on vague description: biome (a large-scale ecological community shaped by climate, such as desert, forest or mangrove), flood plain (the low-lying land alongside a river that is subject to periodic flooding and typically has fertile, deposited soil), western disturbance (a winter weather system originating over the Mediterranean and Caspian regions that brings rain and snow to northern and western Pakistan), non-renewable resource (a resource such as coal, gas or oil that exists in a finite supply and cannot be replenished within a human timescale), and renewable resource (a resource such as solar, wind or hydel power that is naturally replenished and does not run out with use). Confusing a flood plain with a delta, or describing all of Pakistan’s rainfall as monsoon-driven without acknowledging the separate contribution of western disturbances in winter, are both common inaccuracies that cost marks.

  • Prepare one named physical hazard with both causes and human impacts.
  • Distinguish the monsoon from western disturbances as separate causes of regional climate variation.
  • Link at least one named mineral, forest or water resource to its importance for economic development.
