The seven subtopics, all needing a named case study

One case study can support more than one subtopic if it genuinely fits (e.g. the same transnational corporation for 3.1 and 3.3) — but each still needs concrete, place-specific facts, not a vague example.

3.1 Development — indicators and sectors

Sectors shift with development: primary (extraction) → secondary (manufacturing) → tertiary/quaternary (services, research/information) — explain the shift, don’t just recall the diagram. Globalisation: weigh positives (investment, jobs) against negatives (loss of local control, environmental cost).

3.2–3.3 Food production and industry — same systems approach

Both use inputs → processes → outputs (industry’s outputs include waste). For farming: natural inputs (relief, climate, soil) + human inputs (economic, social) determine commercial/subsistence, arable/pastoral/mixed, intensive/extensive classification.

Food shortage causes: natural (drought, floods, storms, pests) vs economic/political (low investment, poor transport, conflict).

Industry location factors: land, labour, raw materials, fuel and power, transport, markets, political factors.

3.4–3.6 Tourism, energy, water

Energy and tourism are the two subtopics singled out for evaluation, not just description — always weigh both sides.

3.7 Environmental risks — the theme’s synthesis

Named threats: soil erosion, desertification, enhanced global warming, pollution (water, air, noise, visual). This subtopic is most often examined by linking back to an earlier process (e.g. industry’s waste output, or energy’s fossil-fuel use) — revise it as a synthesis, not a standalone list.

Worked example: evaluating an energy source

A question asks you to evaluate a country’s decision to expand nuclear power generation.

Benefit:     Low ongoing carbon emissions once built, and a
             reliable, high-output power source not dependent on
             weather conditions (unlike wind or solar).
Drawback:    Very high upfront construction cost and long build
             time, plus the unresolved long-term problem of
             radioactive waste disposal and the (low-probability
             but high-impact) risk of a serious accident.
Balanced
conclusion:  Nuclear power can be a genuine solution to rising
             energy demand with lower emissions than fossil fuels,
             but the decision depends heavily on a country's ability
             to fund the high upfront cost and manage waste safely
             over the long term -- exactly the kind of weighed
             judgement an "evaluate" command word is asking for,
             rather than a one-sided list of advantages.

The same weighed structure – a genuine benefit, a genuine drawback, then a conclusion that depends on context – transfers directly to tourism evaluation questions too.

Exam traps

  • Having only a vague, generic case-study example rather than real, place-specific facts you can write under exam conditions.
  • Reciting the primary→secondary→tertiary sector shift as a diagram without explaining why it happens as development proceeds.
  • Describing energy or tourism content one-sidedly when the command word asks for evaluation.
  • Treating food production and industry as unrelated to each other, rather than recognising both use the same inputs-processes-outputs structure.
  • Forgetting environmental risks (3.7) connects back to processes covered earlier in the theme, rather than being a standalone list of named threats.

Case study reuse: a practical revision shortcut

Given six of the seven subtopics demand a named case study, it is far more efficient to deeply learn 3-4 well-chosen examples that each span multiple subtopics than to memorise seven completely separate, shallow examples. A single large transnational corporation, for instance, can typically supply concrete detail for 3.1 (global links), 3.3 (industrial location factors) and potentially 3.7 (environmental risk from its operations) if you learn its specific facts – named locations, named products, specific employment or investment figures – in enough depth to answer any of those three subtopics’ questions convincingly.
