Unlike DP Geography’s seven geographic-theme options, which depend on what your teacher chose to teach, the full syllabus guide confirms the SL/HL core is identical in content and hours for every student, examined on Paper 2 – which makes Population distribution – changing population a genuinely universal revision target, unlike an option-specific resource. Why populations are unevenly distributed

The core starting point is that population is not spread evenly across the Earth’s surface, and this theme asks why. Revise the main physical and human factors that pull settlement toward some areas and away from others: physical factors include climate, relief (terrain), soil fertility, availability of fresh water and resource access; human factors include economic opportunity, historical patterns of settlement, political stability, and infrastructure. A strong answer names specific factors relevant to a specific named place, rather than listing generic categories.

Key vocabulary

  • Population density – the number of people per unit area, usually expressed per square kilometre. Distinguish this from population distribution, which describes the pattern (where people are) rather than a single density figure.
  • Carrying capacity – the maximum population size an environment can sustainably support given its available resources.
  • Population change – driven by natural change (births minus deaths) and net migration (immigration minus emigration); revise being able to state both components separately rather than only quoting an overall change figure.
  • Demographic transition – the model describing how birth rates and death rates change as a country develops, moving through stages from high birth/death rates to low birth/death rates, and the resulting effect on population growth rate at each stage.

Reading population data

This sub-theme is frequently examined through data-response questions – population pyramids, choropleth density maps, and demographic transition model diagrams. Revise how to read a population pyramid specifically: a wide base indicates high birth rates, a narrowing top indicates lower life expectancy or an ageing population, and an unusually narrow or wide band at a specific age range can indicate a historical event (war, baby boom, mass migration) affecting that cohort. Practising reading unfamiliar pyramids and maps under timed conditions is more valuable revision than only memorising labelled examples, since Paper 2 typically presents new, unseen data.

Case studies to build

Because Paper 2 rewards named, specific examples over generalised description (the same expectation that applies across every DP Geography theme), build a small case-study bank specifically for population distribution: one example of a densely populated area and the factors explaining its density, one example of a sparsely populated area and the factors explaining its sparsity, and one example of significant population change (through migration or natural change) with real, named data – dates, figures, and specific policy or event context, not a generic account.

How this sub-theme connects to the wider core

Population distribution sits alongside Global climate: vulnerability and resilience, and Global resource consumption and security in the compulsory core – and the three are not meant to be revised as unconnected blocks. A region’s population distribution directly shapes its vulnerability to climate impacts (dense coastal populations facing sea-level rise, for instance) and its resource consumption patterns (population size and distribution driving demand). Revising these connections explicitly, rather than treating each core sub-theme in isolation, prepares you for Paper 2 questions that draw on more than one sub-theme within a single answer.

How to approach it

Because this content is examined identically for SL and HL students, do not deprioritise it relative to your chosen options – Paper 2 tests this core with the same weight as Paper 1 tests your options. Practise the specific skill of moving between quantitative data reading (extracting a figure or trend from a pyramid, map or graph) and qualitative explanation (why that pattern exists, using named factors) within the same answer, since this combination is exactly what data-response questions on this theme typically require.
