The chain that connects all three sub-topics
Soil composition (2.1) → farming decisions (2.2) → soil erosion (2.3). Examiners test this as a single question far more often than as three isolated lists — practise tracing it forwards (how does a soil property affect crop/irrigation choice?) and backwards (from a described erosion problem back to the farming decision that likely caused it).
2.1 Soils and crop growth
- Composition: mineral particles (sand, silt, clay), organic content, gases, water.
- Why it matters: mineral mix, nutrients (N, P, K ions), pH, pore space, gas/water content and drainage, ease of cultivation.
- Loam = ideal medium: right particle/pore-space mix, good moisture retention, useful organic and inorganic content, adequate drainage, easy to cultivate.
- Optimum photosynthesis/growth needs: length of growing season, weather conditions, daylight hours.
2.2 Food production and crop yield
Types of agriculture: arable, pastoral, mixed; subsistence, commercial; intensive; monoculture.
Sustainable food production = producing enough for the present generation using methods that let future generations keep growing food from the same land.
Strategies to raise yield (know several, not just one): mixed cropping, intercropping, crop rotation; improved irrigation (trickle/drip, rainwater harvesting, automated watering); mechanisation; GMOs; controlled environments (greenhouses, hydroponics, aeroponics); managed grazing; urban farming; agroforestry; fertilisers (inorganic/organic); chemical/biological pest control.
Unsustainable practice impacts: food wastage; shortages from cash/biofuel crops displacing food crops; mismanaged irrigation causing erosion/salinisation; pesticide/fertiliser overuse; nutrient exhaustion; deforestation; monoculture-driven biodiversity loss.
2.3 Soil erosion
- Causes: unsustainable farming, deforestation, farming on steep slopes, bare soil, wind and water erosion.
- Impacts: silting of rivers, desertification, mass movement (landslides, rockslides, mudslides), habitat/biodiversity loss, reduced crop yield, malnutrition and famine, displacement of people.
- Strategies to reduce it: terracing, contour ploughing, bunds, wind breaks, maintaining vegetation cover, adding organic matter to improve soil structure.
Worked chain — memorise the shape, not just the facts
A hillside farm near a growing city starts with workable loam (2.1). Population pressure pushes the farmer toward monoculture and clears surrounding vegetation to expand cultivation (2.2) — stripping the roots that bound the soil. Heavy rain then washes topsoil into the valley river, silting it downstream and cutting next season’s yield (2.3) — at which point terracing, contour ploughing or a vegetation buffer are the practical fixes examiners expect.
Where Topic 2 sits in the wider 0680 syllabus
Topic 2 is a bridge between the geology of Topic 1 (Natural resources) and the water, atmosphere and ecosystem topics that follow later in the syllabus. Soil sits at the intersection of rock, water, air and living organisms, so this topic deliberately draws together ideas candidates will meet again: weathering processes from Topic 1, water availability in Topic 3, and ecosystem health in Topic 5. Recognising these links matters for synoptic questions that ask candidates to connect land management to a resource or ecosystem topic covered elsewhere in the paper, rather than treating each topic as a sealed unit.
Distinguishing sustainable from unsustainable practice with the same example
Practise describing a single farming decision both ways to sharpen the contrast the syllabus tests. Irrigating a field with a trickle/drip system is a sustainable strategy under 2.2, since it delivers water precisely where needed with minimal waste. The same field irrigated by flooding, by contrast, can cause waterlogging and salinisation over time — one of the unsustainable-practice impacts named in 2.2 — even though both start from the same underlying need to water the crop. Being able to generate this kind of contrast on demand, rather than only reciting the strategy lists separately, signals to an examiner that you understand why a strategy is sustainable rather than just that it is labelled as such.
Command words specific to this topic
Cambridge Paper 1 tends to test soil composition with “describe” questions expecting the named components in context (mineral particles, organic content, gases, water, and why each matters for crop growth), while erosion-strategy questions more often use “explain and evaluate,” which wants candidates to weigh a strategy’s effectiveness against its cost or practicality in the given scenario, not simply name it. Preparing separate answer structures for these two command-word families — factual description versus weighed evaluation — avoids under-answering a question that asks for more than recall.
Exam traps
- Learning 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3 as three unconnected lists instead of one cause-and-effect chain.
- Naming an erosion-reduction strategy without matching it to the specific problem in the scenario.
- Confusing subsistence and commercial agriculture, or skipping the exact wording of “sustainable food production.”
- Answering “explain and evaluate” questions on erosion strategies by only naming them, without weighing effectiveness against cost or practicality.
