Section A — 3247 First Language: Part 1 Reading

Read the passage:

نوجوان نسل میں کتاب بینی کا رجحان کم ہوتا جا رہا ہے۔ موبائل فون اور انٹرنیٹ نے وقت گزارنے کے نئے ذرائع فراہم کیے ہیں، جس کی وجہ سے بہت سے طلبہ کتاب کھولنے کے بجائے اسکرین کو ترجیح دیتے ہیں۔ ماہرین تعلیم کا کہنا ہے کہ کتابیں پڑھنے سے تخیل اور تجزیاتی صلاحیت پروان چڑھتی ہے، جب کہ مسلسل اسکرین کے استعمال سے توجہ کا دورانیہ کم ہوتا ہے۔ کچھ اسکول اب ہفتہ وار “خاموش مطالعے” کا وقت مقرر کر رہے ہیں تاکہ طلبہ میں دوبارہ کتاب سے رغبت پیدا ہو۔

Section B — 3247 First Language: Part 2 Writing

5. Choose one title only, and write 300–400 words. [25]

• Education and training: “کھیلوں کو نصاب کا لازمی حصہ ہونا چاہیے۔” اس بیان سے آپ کس حد تک متفق ہیں؟ (Discursive)

Section C — 3248 Second Language: five-exercise practice

Exercise 1 — Short-answer questions. Read the notice:

اطلاع برائے طلبہ لائبریری میں کتابوں کی نئی کھیپ پہنچ گئی ہے۔ طلبہ پیر تا جمعرات صبح 9 بجے سے دوپہر 1 بجے تک کتابیں جاری کروا سکتے ہیں۔ ایک وقت میں زیادہ سے زیادہ دو کتابیں جاری ہوں گی، اور واپسی کی مدت دو ہفتے ہے۔

Exercise 5 — Writing exercise. Write an email of approximately 150 words to your class teacher, explaining that you will be absent from school for three days and asking for the homework you will miss. State the purpose clearly and use an appropriately formal register. [14]

Marking: identifies the decline, its cause, its effect and the schools’ response [4]; own words, not lifted phrasing [1]; within the word limit [1].

5. No single correct answer — mark against the three strands. Task achievement and content (10): fully relevant to the chosen title, developed with specific examples, not generic assertion. Structure (5): a clear introduction, developed middle paragraphs each carrying one idea, and a conclusion that resolves the argument or the narrative. Language (10): a range of complex sentence structures, accurate gender and verb agreement, and vocabulary that goes beyond the everyday without becoming unnatural. A response using only simple, repetitive sentences cannot reach the top band on language even if every sentence is grammatically correct.

Marking: clear statement of purpose (absence + request) [3]; formal register maintained throughout — aap, no informal address [3]; correct email/letter conventions, opening and closing [3]; within approximately 150 words [2]; accuracy of grammar and gender agreement [3].

Where marks are usually lost

• 3247 Part 2: picking a title, writing half of it, then realising it does not fit the required word count or topic area — plan before starting.
• 3248 Exercise 4: exceeding the word limit, which costs marks directly and wastes exam time for no credit.
• Both papers: copying sentences from the source text where “own words” is required; drifting from formal to informal register partway through a piece; losing the ergative ne under time pressure; leaving no time at the end to check gender agreement and script accuracy.
