Location — map facts to lock in

  • Tropic of Cancer crosses Pakistan; know its line on the outline map.
  • Latitude: 30°N and 36°N. Longitude: 64°E, 70°E and 76°E.
  • Arabian Sea borders the south; know which countries border Pakistan on every other side.
  • Command word is almost always “identify,” not “explain” — this section is assessed on a map.

Administrative areas and cities — the 15 to place correctly

Islamabad, Murree, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Sialkot, Peshawar, Chitral, Gilgit, Hyderabad, Karachi, Quetta, Gwadar.

Most common mark loss: placing Gilgit or Chitral (north) too far south, or confusing coastal Gwadar with inland Hyderabad. Drill relative position, not just individual location.

Topography and drainage (1c) — no formation, only identification

You do not need to know how any landform was geologically formed — only how to identify it and how it affects human activity.

The Indus and its tributaries (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej) matter twice: learn their courses here and the payoff carries straight into the Natural Resources section on water later in Paper 2.

Two influence points are the ones most likely tested as short “explain” answers, not recall:

  • How steep slopes versus flat land shape land use.
  • How mountains and deserts shape road and rail networks.

Climate (1d) — describe AND explain

This is the most exam-heavy part of Section 1.

  • Monsoon: know the specific cause — this is the one rain-type cause the syllabus actually requires, so do not spend equal time on other rain mechanisms.
  • Four climate zones: arid, semi-arid, humid, highland — be able to describe how temperature and rainfall differ across the seasons in each.
  • Influence of climate: always answer in pairs — a benefit and a problem. Monsoon rain supports agriculture but also causes flooding that disrupts industry and communications; cold mountain weather constrains people’s lives but also feeds the glacial meltwater the Indus system depends on.

Exam traps

  • Treating the whole section as pure memorisation — location/topography is map-based, but climate answers consistently reward explanation over listing.
  • Blending 1(b)’s administrative-area boundaries with 1(c)’s physical landform boundaries — they are assessed separately and mixing them loses precision.
  • Giving a one-sided climate-influence answer (only benefits, or only problems) instead of the expected paired structure.

Build one map, add to it every session

Start a single annotated outline map of Pakistan: administrative areas and cities first, then landforms and rivers, then a simple climate-zone overlay. Because Section 1 underpins the rest of Paper 2, pull this map back out whenever a later topic (natural resources, power, agriculture) refers to a place introduced here, rather than filing Section 1 away as finished.

Why Section 1 pays off twice

Every later section of Paper 2 refers back to places, rivers and mountain ranges from Section 1 without re-explaining them. A candidate who has not secured the Indus tributaries or the western plateaux here will lose time re-deriving context mid-answer in later sections — memorising this section thoroughly is one of the most efficient uses of Paper 2 revision time precisely because it is reused so often.

Neighbouring countries and Pakistan’s regional position

Pakistan sits within South and Central Asia, and questions on 1(a) sometimes ask candidates to name the countries bordering Pakistan rather than just plot latitude and longitude. Practise naming each neighbour and the general direction it lies in from Islamabad — this turns a pure map-reading task into something you can also answer as a short written recall question if a series phrases it that way.

Why administrative areas and physical landforms are assessed separately

A frequent source of confusion is treating 1(b)’s administrative map (provinces, territories, cities) as if it were the same map as 1(c)’s physical landforms (mountain ranges, plateaux, deserts). They are drawn, labelled and assessed as two distinct layers. A city like Quetta, for example, belongs to 1(b) as an administrative location, while the Balochistan Plateau it sits within belongs to 1(c) as a physical feature — an answer that blends the two, describing a city as though it were itself a landform, loses the precision examiners are looking for.

Linking climate zones to specific regions

Rather than learning the four climate zones (arid, semi-arid, humid, highland) as abstract categories, attach each to a region introduced earlier in this same section: highland climate to the northern mountain ranges, arid and semi-arid to the western plateaux and southern deserts, and humid conditions to the areas most affected by monsoon rainfall. This regional attachment makes it much easier to answer questions that describe a location and ask which climate zone it belongs to, since the answer becomes a lookup against the map you have already built rather than a separate piece of recall.
