The qualification

OxfordAQA International GCSE English Language (9270)

Thanks to its rigorous summative assessment of students' skills and abilities, this International English GCSE specification offers excellent preparation for International AS and A-level English Language, as well as giving students a grounding in a wide variety of language that will stay with them for life. — OxfordAQA, official syllabus page

Paper 1 (Literary Non-Fiction and Composition) is sat by all candidates; Paper 2 offers a choice between a Source-Based Reading and Directed Writing exam or a teacher-assessed, board-moderated non-exam assessment, weighted 60/40 with Paper 1. An optional Speaking and Listening endorsement is separately certificated. First teaching September 2016, first examined May/June 2018.

Source: official OxfordAQA specification, verified 2026-08-28. Directly confirmed against the official live "Assessment" section: a linear qualification with two routes. All candidates sit Paper 1 (Literary Non-Fiction and Composition, 60% of GCSE). The remaining 40% is EITHER Route A's Paper 2 (Source-Based Reading and Directed Writing, an exam) OR Route B's Non-Exam Assessment (a written task and commentary, teacher assessed and AQA moderated) -- modeled here with routeGroup, mirroring Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English 0475's compulsory-component-plus-routes pattern. An optional, separately certificated Speaking and Listening endorsement also exists but carries no marks toward this qualification's grade and is not modeled as a component. First teaching September 2016, first examined May/June 2018.
