The qualification
Cambridge International AS & A Level Geography (9696)
Cambridge International AS and A Level Geography helps learners to understand the relevance of geography to their own lives, the lives of others and the world in which we live, promoting well-informed, enthusiastic, engaged learners. — Cambridge, official syllabus page
AS Level is assessed via Paper 1 Core Physical Geography and Paper 2 Core Human Geography (each 50% of the AS, 25% of the full A Level). A Level adds Paper 3 Advanced Physical Geography Options and Paper 4 Advanced Human Geography Options, each requiring candidates to answer on 2 of the optional topics offered (25% of the A Level each). The named options within Papers 3 and 4 are not itemised in this entry — only the paper-level structure is verified here.
Specifications change between examination series. Always confirm the current syllabus and assessment structure on the Cambridge syllabus page for your examination year.
Assessment structure

Source: official Cambridge specification, verified 2026-08-27. Directly confirmed against the official PDF's "Component/Weighting" table (Syllabus overview, p.13): Papers 1-4 each 1h30/60 marks, weighted 25% each of the full A Level (Papers 1+2 are 50% each of the AS Level route instead, not separately modeled here -- see the board's own table for exact AS-route figures). Unlike every other record in this file, this PDF does not use the phrase "Externally assessed" anywhere for any component, so externallyAssessed is deliberately left unset here rather than inferred. A Level candidates follow a staged route: Papers 1+2 (AS Level) in one series, then Papers 3+4 (completing the A Level) in a later series.
