The qualification
Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level Urdu (9UR0)
The Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level in Urdu develops students’ ability to understand and use Urdu accurately and effectively for a range of purposes, including translation, comprehension, essay writing and response to set texts. — Pearson Edexcel, official syllabus page
IMPORTANT: this is the UK GCE A Level Urdu (9UR0), not International A Level (IAL) — Edexcel does not offer Urdu as an IAL subject, unlike the other subjects available in this combination. Three papers: Paper 1 (9UR0/01) Translation into English, reading comprehension and writing (research question) in Urdu; Paper 2 (9UR0/02) Translation into Urdu and written response to works studied; Paper 3 (9UR0/03) Listening, reading and writing in Urdu.
Specifications change between examination series. Always confirm the current syllabus and assessment structure on the Pearson Edexcel syllabus page for your examination year.

Source: official Pearson Edexcel specification, verified 2026-08-28. IMPORTANT STRUCTURAL NOTE, distinct from every other record in this file: this is the Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Urdu (listening, reading and writing) -- a UK-regulated A Level qualification, NOT part of the International Advanced Level (IAL) suite the other Edexcel edexcel/a-level records above belong to. Its own specification PDF states this explicitly on its title page. Directly confirmed against the official PDF (Specification Issue 1, June 2018): a linear qualification, not staged into IAS/IA2 units -- the spec states plainly "Students must complete all assessments in May/June in any single year," so all three papers are sat together in one series with no separate AS certification route. Paper 1 (2h30, 80 marks, 40%): translation into English (20), reading (20), an independent-research writing question (40). Paper 2 (2h40, 110 marks, 30%): translation into Urdu (20 marks) plus an internal-choice written response to two prescribed literary texts, or one text and one film (90 marks total, Sections B/C -- the choice does not change the paper's marks or weighting, so no alternativeGroup is needed). Paper 3 (2h15, 60 marks, 30%): listening comprehension (30) plus a combined listening/reading/writing question (30); this is the qualification's only assessed listening component -- speaking is explicitly stated as unassessed. First teaching September 2018, first assessment May/June 2020.
